jdr99a Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I feel like such a fool for even asking this.. I just bought a Shimano SLX MGL and just spooled it up tonight. Does the line go above or below the stabilizing bar? I’ve got a dozen reels and this is the only one whose bar looks like this one. See pictures below. 1 Quote

Super User ATA Posted January 29, 2021 Super User Posted January 29, 2021 why don't you spool it with braid? much easier to handle and then you can add leader to it. 1 Quote
jdr99a Posted January 29, 2021 Author Posted January 29, 2021 Thanks for the help everyone. I will end up spoiling with either braid or fluoro. I always spool up with cheap mono to get a feel for the reel before deciding how I want to set it up for longer term. Quote

Please do braid and when you master it go to Fluorocarbon, Mono will backlash and make you feel hate yourself. at least it was like that for me when I try to do the same and spool up all my BFS reels with mono. Now all of them braid and I have no problem with them. I can change to flour if I like or use it as leader. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 Well, when I got into bass fishing a bait cast reels, I, like you, would spool up with mono to get a feel for the reel and it always worked for me. I am not a braid fan and have gone to flourocarbon on all of my reels exept for the frog reel and that is 50lb Sufix 832. Starting out with braid resulted in too much fiddling around with it, at least for me. Quote

Bought one last fall and used it with 30lb braid with no issues. Smooth and cast very well, drag is smooth too. This year I have spooled with 10lb big game mono for squarebills and spinnerbaits, light texas rigs, etc. I used to be all braid 100%, but because I have a lot of XF rods, I think it will be fine with mono. So far, just pitching in the house for practice it's working well. Quote
