Luke Barnes Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I went by Academy today to get a jar of JJs in Methylate and they had 4 packs of spike it markers. It came with blue, fire red, orange, and chart. Picked them up too and I was impressed how well they work. Smell isn't as strong as I thought but the color worked like a charm. I wanted to be different amd customize my soft baits so ita not exactly what the fish see all the time. I picked up this 5 pack of BD hollow bodies for use on an A Rig on clearance from TW. Perch looked closest to a bluegill. But add in the markers and I think it turned out dang good!! Added red on the tail to look like blood too. 7 Quote

If its anything like the dip it stains the plastic and gets into it. I hear JJs actually soaks and dyes the entire section you dip and this does the outside but it wasnt going anywhere. 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted January 29, 2021 Super User Posted January 29, 2021 That looks good. Hopefully it works as good as it looks. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 29, 2021 Super User Posted January 29, 2021 Been a Spike-It marker user & abuser for a while now. Prefer to do it at least the night before but it will work OK 'on the water' as well. This one starts out as a pearl white bait . . . A-Jay 3 Quote

Yes if you dip JJ and then cut open I believe it will be colored to the core. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 29, 2021 Super User Posted January 29, 2021 I've used those felt tip markers from time to time & agree that they work. Sometimes, they work better than the dip, because you want a small speck of color here or there, also dips don't do horizontal or vertical lines very well. If you want the tail of your bait to be solid chartreuse, then I think that the dips work better. Word of caution on the felt tip markers - I'd advise keeping them in their own quart zip lock bag when not in use. They aren't immune to freezing, should you space out and leave them on your boat deck at the wrong time. They aren't immune to crushing, should they fall down to the floor of your boat and end up underneath your feet. Zip lock bag helps in each of these situations. Quote
PotatoLake Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I used them a lot last year and I agree with everyone else they work great. I noticed the craws I was finding in fish's mouths had blue tip on them. So I marked up a lot of my craw trailers with the blue marker. Very easy to use. Quote

Im a bank fisherman but ive been debating on whether to keep them home or in my tackle backpack when I fish. The JJs is staying home!!! But having a blue marker im good with. Good idea on paying attention to the forage and coloring accordingly. 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted January 31, 2021 Super User Posted January 31, 2021 They are fun to play with but they keep permeating . So what looks cool today might not look the same when its time to use it . I liked using the red marker to put a stripe down a blue Jelly worm , after a few days I had a two tone worm of blue and purple . 3 Quote

I'll wait until its the night before or morning of before I mark all five and put them on the A Rig. 2 Quote
lo n slo Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 i keep a chartreuse/orange pen in the tackle bag at all times, as well as, the chartreuse/garlic dip. 1 Quote
PotatoLake Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 I’m sure I’m crazy, but my catch rate goes down when I tip soft plastics with the chartreuse vs using the original color w/ no die. I’m sure it varies lake to lake, pond to pond. Quote

I’m sure it varies lake to lake, pond to pond. I'm doing a test on an A Rig and tipping the tails of two swimbaits with chartreuse and the other three left alone. All five are same size so will be interesting to see if they get different bites or not. Quote
jgordon Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Well I have JJ but being on a yak I decided I would grab a pack of these as well due to ease of use on the water and not worrying about storage. Cant wait to get back on the water soon. Thanks for sharing the photos. 1 Quote

Chonch12 Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I picked up a couple last year. They are great, I like to use Chart on some tails. Just to be safe I store them in a separate compartment in my Backpack in an old Soft Plastics zip baggy. Don't need one of them magically blowing up on me haha Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted February 5, 2021 Super User Posted February 5, 2021 Use them swim bait tails and craw tips. They make a difference Quote
