I recently bought 2 of the Lews KVD casting reels and 1 of the Lews KVD spinning reels, and 3 Dobyns rods to attach them to. The spinning reel didn't lock into the reel seat all the way; there was a gap or a lip at the top; it's like the reel feet were too long. So I took a rotary tool and grinded a little off the bottom reel foot (maybe 1/16"). I grinded the burrs of next, and then I polished it up. Other than the paint being removed from the aluminum on the bottom reel foot, you'd never know I had done this. It was nicely done if I may say so myself. All snug and properly fitting now.

I do have a question though. I didn't ruin the integrity of the reel, did I?

Oh, no no no!

You made something WORK!

It's too easy to think of things that must be "Industry Standard". It's a pie in the sky hope that often does not hold water.

It sounds to me like you had a problem and you solved it.

I did the same thing with a fly reel recently.   I tried to model the new shape after a reel that did fit.

And it turned out well fitting and nicely done if I say so myself also. :)  Beware, I found metal can get dang hot under a Dremel-type tool.

It's strange how reels don't always follow the "standard" size and shape to fit seemingly same rods.  I recently found that those old 60's - 70's Mitchell reels had different size feet also -- 300 vs. 300A.

If you read the facts you’ll find cringing is not allowed on this forum.  Years ago it was common to have to add a shim to fill gaps in an aluminum reel set to get the nut to lock tight.

I did the same thing with a Curado 100B that I have. When I first got it I intended to put it on a rod that created the same issue. I've debated selling the reel on our flea market recently but hesitated, thinking it might not appeal to someone.
