On the handle of the reel it has a clicker for what size line you have on it so it balances the "weight" to help prevent backlash.

 It reads, 8, 10, 14, 17, 20, 30, 50, and 65lbs, let's say you put 12lbs line on, do you set the clicker on 10lbs or 14 does 10 cover the weight till 14? It's confusing me.

That dial is a "line memo feature".

Simply used to note / help remember what line test is on the reel.

It plays no role in casting or anything else on the reel.

Any real difference between the regular casting and Tour? I have a Tour but haven't used it yet but was thinking about adding a regular S3 to the collection.

Yeah, I have two smokes and two tours and the tours are smoother. But I like them both if I would choose it probably be the tour, unless your need an 8.1:1 then you have go with the smoke because they done sell the in the tour model.

I'm looking at color matching, so the mostly black of the regular was what was drawing me in. My Tour has pretty tight handle knobs (which is a good thing), how is the play in the regular?

Perfect on mine, most solid or durables reals I've ever used, you can use for just about any dish even salt water.

I'm in the market for a low handle slop, black reel for pitching jigs so this might be my pony. Thanks!

Handle isn't carbon, you can't beet the 25lbs of max drag, most reels don't even come close to that. Same features except the jeweled pin and the handle I think.

I use the smoke s3 8.1:1 for flippn, pitching and froggn.

Just received a KVD Smoke S3 and KVD 101H.  Got a PT Tour S3 too late last year to use.  If the KVD 101H performs half as good as it looks, it will be one of my best reel deals.  :lol1:

Believe PhishLi has first hand experience with both.  Maybe he will be along to give an opinion.

Do you mean between the Smoke S3 and the Tour S3?

Yes

I haven't cracked open a Smoke S3 yet, but I've had the KVD Smoke S3 opened up. That reel is nearly 8 oz due to a brass drive shaft and a steel main drag washer vs aluminum for both in the Tour. They actually ported the first washer on the Tour to save weight. Just guessing, but the 1/2 oz difference between the Tour and the Smoke S3 probably comes down to the Tour's carbon handle vs aluminum for the Smoke. The Tour's hardened spool tension washers make a slight difference in feel and longer casts.

Otherwise, the performance differences are marginal. My Tour has been fantastic, especially once I cleaned and lubed the spool bearings and broke-in the brakes. The main gear and pinion's grease was replaced with Shimano ACE. The reel has remained as smooth as when it was fresh. No quirks.
