I am trying to pair my SLX MGL with a rod. I think I may have found it but I'm just making sure I have what I think I will use it for. I plan on getting the SLX Rod in Medium Extra Fast and the lures I intend to use come as follows:

Wacky Rigs, Shaky Heads, Flukes, Finesse Jig, weightless senkos-worms, Mojo Rig,
3/8oz < Spinnerbaits, small Texas Rigs, Tubes

Will this set up get the job done?

I like a MXF for wacky rigs, weightless Senkos and Zoom Tricks, etc. My theory (especially for WR) is that I’m fishing more of a slack line, and when the bass starts running with the bait and I reel the line in tight, it’s a quick hookset with a WR, or it’s a faster hookset with a weightless TR Senko or Zoom Trick.

Maybe not, but it’s working for me so far!

It depends on the rod >some are stiffer than others.

My initial thought is that I would not use it for spinnerbaits, flukes, and shakey head but it would be ok for the rest.

I don't like spinning rods for shakey heads or wacky rigs. I feel like I have more control with a baitcaster.

I believe flukes would be ok, and probably shakey heads but not spinnerbaits. Probably lose bass if hooking them on a fast retrieve.

Interesting. I don’t have experience with shakey heads but fish WR a lot. I feel like a MXF or MF spinning rig is perfect for a WR. Especially in close quarters where I want the bait to drop vertically.

For fluke type baits and small swimbaits I like a fast rod similar to a jerk bait rod.  For shakey, Med x-fast is fine but I like a spinning rod for this technique.   Spinnerbaits, I like a slower taper (mod-fast or fast) so the fish can swallow the bait.

I agree with the other responses. I do however think it would be cool to throw an 1/8 to 5/16 spinnerbait. I have two Loomis 852c JWR and they are some of my favorite rods to use. Great for weightless senko, small jigs (1/8-5/16), poppers, light T rigs are great on it almost always 1/8 and 3/16 and a 3.5" beaver, and 3.5" swimbaits.

If it's a M/F on the heavy side, then you can use it for lightly weighted T-Rigs, 3/8 spinnerbaits and 3/8oz chatterbaits, smaller paddletail swim baits, squarebills and finesse jigs. Basically rods in this range may be labeled medium or medium heavy - think of it as medium heavy lite.

If it's on the lighter side, then it gets the nod for lighter soft plastics, wacky rigged soft plastics, jerkbaits, poppers, crankbaits, tubes, and those smaller swimbaits and finesse jigs with really light wire hooks.

Other then the spinnerbait a M XF should do all of them well.  IMO XF are great for shakey heads and lightweight or weightless plastics.  It should handle T rigs fairly well, if your having issues driving the hook through the bait on the set go to a lighter wire hook.  The drawbacks with XFs are that they dont have load deep into the blank so casting distance suffers.

Personally I'm not crazy about the SLX rods, my MH F is like a pool cue and very tip heavy even with an 8oz SLX DC.  They aren't bad rods, I just think there are better rods at that price point.  The only reason I settled for an SLX was because I couldn't get the levante or zodias I wanted for at least another 5 months.

I think you will be terribly disappointed throwing crankbaits on that rod.

Good thing that isn't what the OP asked for.  Throwing crankbaits would be fine, it's the retrieve that would suck.

For sure that what’s what I was trying to say.
