Topher89 Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 I am located near Lake Harding in Alabama. I have used very few jerkbaits and have not been successful. I am just curious if anyone around the area of Lake Harding, Martin, Eufaula, West Point, etc. ever use jerkbaits successfully? Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 24, 2021 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2021 I’ve fished a tad around your areas but maybe the recent bass open on lay lake would be a good example, most competitors used a jerkbait to catch lots of fish. My personal favs are rapala husky jerk and smithwick rattlin rogue. Both suspend perfectly out of the box on cheap mono line. Floating jerkbait works fine once it warms up, I like suspending baits in the cold Quote

It doesn't matter where you fish geographically or what body of water your fishing jerkbaits work everywhere. Most fish are predators & eat other fish period. Jerkbaits represent a dying or struggling fish to all predators. Find the depth that the baitfish are in & work your jerkbait at or above that depth. It's a killer presentation to both numbers & trophies. It's a universal bait. 1 1 Quote
volzfan59 Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 While not in your exact area in AL, I have fished jerk baits on the lower end of Wheeler Lake. It has been my experience that they will work year round, but produce better in early to late spring. If you're not having much success, vary your retrieve or lure color. If the water is fairly cold, don't snap the lure when you jerk it. I've just pulled the lure vs. a hard jerk. You just have to play with it and find the retrieve the bass are looking for. 1 1 Quote
Topher89 Posted January 24, 2021 Author Posted January 24, 2021 I am a believer that you do not need every color of lure. I feel like 2-4 colors is enough. So if I am using a jerkbait in a shad lake. I would think I should only need shad colors. With that being said should a black, blue, or purple back with silver sides be any different from each other? I am pretty sure I over think everything. 1 Quote
galyonj Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I think, with jerkbaits, your tempo is at least as important as lure coloration. 1 1 Quote
