Looking for a combo to throw Texas rig and jigs in mostly 3/8 to 1/2 oz. Prefer Shimano or Daiwa for a reel. What’s the best in the 700-1000 dollar range. Fishing mostly rocky bottom in Ky and Barely lakes.

Daiwa Tatula Elite  $230

MegaBass Orochi XX Braillist or Tour Versatile $300

Total $530, well within your budget.

Or get two Tatula Elite's and both a Braillist for jigs and Versatile for T-tigs.

Hmmm, sounds familiar to what's on my yak with me at all times.

I would suggest a  ST. CROIX XLC71MHXF Legend X 7ft1 MH extra Fast paired with a Steez A.

Or a GLX 853C paired with a Metanium MGL

You can't go wrong with either, both awesome for what you want, solid warranties.

Gonna get a lot of subjective responses.  If you arent fishing in a lot of cover a MH will do the trick.  A 7.3 ratio reel will be fine. But you could use a 8:1 if that's your preference.

700 to 1000 is a good budget for the combo, giving you alot of wiggle room for a strong sensitive rod.  You can't go wrong in the 300 to 450 range for rods.  Same can be said for the 250 to 400 range for reels.

You can def get by with lower cost options.  If you wana ere on the side of saving a few bucks, you cant go wrong with Expride, Orochi XX, tatula elite, dobyns champ as far as rods.  Reels, tatula sv tw, currado k, bantam,

I recently bought a used CONQUEST rod for 500 and I'm leaning toward a bantam mgl.  Total of little more than 850.

I def think u can get a good combo for under 600.

I’m all about saving money but I want to try some higher end stuff to see what I’m missing. Most everything I use is in the 200-300 range and especially want something more sensitive for the rock bottom I fish.

Well, if that's the case get your hands on a GLX or NRX. 7foot or 7'1 4 power rod(heavy) and get a7:1 reel with the rest of your budget.

With that budget, a GLX  or NRX with a Daiwa Zillion SV.   That would be sweet.  I would actually consider a custom build for the rod to get a high quality blank built exactly how you like.

Where/who is a good place for custom builds?

I was about to recommend the brailist as well. Another option I have used, sadly don’t own, and really liked is the dobyns xstacy 754c. Super light, just as sensitive as an NRX and better balanced IMO. One of the things I like about the xstacy, just like the brailist, is that it loads more than a normal “fast” rod which really helps keep jig fish pinned especially when using braid to a leader like I do. Reel wise  I would recommend the shimano bantam mgl, super tough and smooth reel. I’d you want to spend more, step up to a metanium or spend less and get a curado dc. Can’t go wrong with any of those options

DVT or ghotti from Bass Resource here would be great connections.  You might want to start there and communicate with them.  I think you would find it amazing how with someone guiding you, you can get a rod to exactly fit the way you fish, exactly how you want it made.  That rod will fit YOU, not trying to find a rod that might work close to what you want.  Good luck in whatever you decide on.  With your budget, it will be awesome either way!

I would probably go with something like a Daiwa Tatula SV (the smaller, lighter 2020 model) for a reel and spend the money on the rod. Other than maybe a drop shot rig, I figure a rod for T-Rigs and Jigs would be the best place to spend your money on.

There's a few rods that you could choose from. I would note that you'll generally want to throw a 1/4oz or heavier weight with a 5" senko with these rods.

  • Daiwa Steez AGS 7'1" MH/XF. I picked up the 7'5" MHH/F rod for jigs this winter and while I haven't fished it yet, I was amazed at all of the vibrations I could feel when I took the rod sleeve off it. I'm not sure it's necessarily better than competing rods, but it's up there and also balances perfectly with a lighter reel. Top notch build quality as well. I plan to upgrade one of my MH/F rods to this someday. Daiwa has been my go to brand for the record so I might be biased.
  • Megabass Destroyer P5 X-Bites - the Megabass P5 series has been extremely well received and their build quality is also top notch. This is listed as a 5.5 power, but they say it casts lighter weighted T-Rigs well.
  • GLoomis NRX is generally the standard for high end rods. The 854C or 894C depending on the length you want would be the specific models. The NRX is kind of the standard for high end rods and needs to be mentioned here.
  • Dobyns Xtasy 724C or 754C depending on length. If the general power and action is consistent with the lower lines, it's a fantastic T-Rig rod, but not too bad for jigs either although a little better for a 3/8oz than 1/2oz, although it will work.

This, but bump up to the new zillion or a new metanium. Still well within your price range.

I actually just bought a Zillion for the first time but haven't used it so didn't recommend it.

Just got that rod in a Legend Extreme and it’s insane. It excels at trigs and jigs, and the softer tip gives you something to watch for bites as well as feel. Plus it makes skipping and side arm casts way easier. Cherry on the cake is that it can also do a wide variety of tasks very well, especially single hook moving baits but even some bigger treble hooks in a pinch.

Soft tip, stout butt, great sensitivity, and made in America instead of a country with an active genocide. I like MBR rods for the exact same reasons too.

I have it in the new AGS model as well, it's awesome I agree.

I have an 844 and a SC LE MH that I extended for that reason.  Had a rod builder make the SC 7'10" for bottom fishing and the 844 to 7'4" for skipping docks and such.  I fish a lot of 1/4oz T-rigs and like a softer action rod for tossing those.  SC MF kicked out to 7'6" is what I use for those.

At your budget I would absolutely have a custom stick made for exactly what you want to throw.  3/8 & 1/2 work well together on a MH.  Personally I use Thorne Bros outside of Minneapolis...but I can drive there somewhat quickly.

Well I went with the Metanium reel and G-Loomis NRX 873C. I think it will fit me well for my needs. Seems like a sweet rig.
