It doesn't hurt anything to use it. Can't say for sure that it helps, but for free you might as well give it a shot.

I agree, you have nada to lose in trying it.

Once upon a time I had a bottle of that stuff.  I used it to marinate different soft plastics in.  Didn't seem to do anything bad to the plastics.  The baits that I tried were an off brand I got in Walmart, that had a very "plast-icky" smell/stench when you first opened the bag.  The actual baits were a trick worm knock off and a lizard knock off.  The lizards might have been Gene Larew factory seconds.  It is a 4 oz bottle, I put in maybe a quarter to half ounce, split between 2 bags.  The next time I went fishing with those baits I got bit and not too long after that the bags got used up.  Might be interesting to see what that stuff would do with quality soft plastics, stuff that wasn't warped, factory second stuff.   At this moment, no clue what happened to the rest of the bottle.   I'm not real good about throwing stuff away, so it is probably in the fishing shed some where.

40 years ago I learned about fish-scent poultice from a S. Padre guide.  His rule then was smear the lure every 3rd cast.

The point of using it is to mask the smell of us on the lure.

The newer stuff is a little more tenacious.

At least use it on the lead and steel.

my Alaska guide buddy wears gloves for the same reason - so the bait doesn't smell and taste like us

The KicknBass Garlic does work. My fishing partner out fished me using it pretty regular on slower presentations with it until I finally picked up a bottle.

I never really understood this. Most fish that your throwing plastics at with the exception of a few are predatory and reactionary feeders and by the time they have had a chance to smell anything its already down their throat.

Catfish, perch, drum, sheephead, gar and the likes...I can understand some scent play there.  Just my humble opinion based solely on my lone experience tinkering with scents and so forth.

Throw it away and buy a tube of MegaStrike.

This.  Also good for styling your hair.  I even brush my teeth with it instead of toothpaste.

What does mega strike smell like? Does it have actual baitfish oil? I almost buy it every time I’m at bass pro

It smells bad, which is good.  Though how it smells to us matters little.  Megastrike is an amino acid based scent and lube that stays where you put it. Fish can't detect oil based scents.    I have a half dozen tubes around at all times, since partners usually end up taking it, lol.  A dab will do ya!

they have also have a reaction to taste, swallow into their gullet (or crushers) or spit out.  Reactionary hook setting will rip mouth membrane in many salt fish from seatrout to mackerel.  Hope this helps.

Brandon harvested the roe for more king bait.

your skin excretes oil just like fish do, and it's tenacious on everything you handle

I had a garlic based scent I used once. After the 3-4 th fish picked it up and spit it out I quit using it.

I simply cook a lot of Italian meals and go heavy on the garlic to repel vampires but also to attract bass. So basically if I don’t smell like fish, I smell like garlic and then I smell like fish ?

This is the fish attractant I look for along the bank.

That's the greatest stuff since canned beer! Wait! What am I saying, nothing beats canned beer!

Seriously though, It can't hurt in using it. I prefer Megastrike but, since it was free for you, you've got nothing to lose. ?

Maybe fish like the smell of people? I have no doubt a bass would eat me if it were big enough.

Not meant toward your friend (I'm sure a guide knows better, and is in a boat), but I hate seeing gloves littering the banks where I fish. Why can't people just use one old glove over and over instead of half a box of those thin latex ones?

I don't think my smell can overpower that of an anchovy, but on that I admit I may be wrong. I never use gloves and I've caught plenty on live or frozen bait.

Off topic - I remember snorkeling in Hawaii and being amazed that most of the fish ignored my presence.

One day I will go to my local creek and pull some baits around visible bass, both with and without scent. See if I can see a difference in their reactions. Would be fun to try.

It works so well that it became a crutch for me many years ago. If you are not desperate to catch fish I’d say avoid any attractants and master your skills with artificials without them.

Mind you, this is just an opinion. But if you toss a Senko or Zoom or any other plastic bait and just let it sit there, you may catch a bass, but probably not anything else. Toss a whole nightcrawler that’s basically on its last legs (so not wriggling or moving), and you may catch a bass, or a catfish, or have it taken by a bluegill, etc. Most likely from the scent.

My issue sue is that I have scent and often forget to use it. But I think it’s worthwhile.

It helped you catch more fish and you would advise someone not use it?

I think you end up relying too much on it rather than focusing on how you should be properly working the lure. It doesn’t even work all the time or on big Bass. It’s usually better for the smaller Bass.
