Trout lures

Going to try for trout again on stocking day this time.

 

I got mice tails, trout magnets, kastmaster, rooster tails, spoons, power bait, and some streamer flies, am I missing anything?

 

Also regarding stocked trout and them being raised eating fish pellets, anyone think some dog food would mimic fish pellets good?

 

I wonder if there's any way to rig actual fish pellets? And does anyone know what kind they use at the hatcheries?

Your post belongs in other species forum. Hatchery raised Rainbow Trout eat pellets and eat Trout Power bait dough bait. Lures works better for hold over trout that learned to eat wild critters.

2 rigs work;

1. the lake rig or what bass anglers call a C-rig except 3’ of 2 to 3 lb mono leader, size 16 gold treble hook and thumbnail size ball of Power Bait.

2. Slip bobber rig. Thill pencil slip bobber with the same leader p, hook and dough ball using size 1/16-1/8 oz split shot to slowly sink the dough ball between 8’ to 12’.

Simple but works everywhere.

i grabbed both! lol. the bag recommends to use treble hook size you said so pretty sure thats what its designed for. well see how it does.

Called prado lake previously and was told stocking was today at 11. Arrived and was told stocking is tomorrow. Wasted my time and money and was a huge disappointment and letdown. Will not be returning. Aside from them stocking, the only fish in the lake are carp cause the water is poor quality.

 Thats how I do it and no matter what pull catch the. But hey the lures also getting them, very light underpin with small swimbait, and trout magnets are way to go. don't forget to change color sometimes if you don't get anything.

I got 80% of my trout on it, there other 20% is yellow and rainbow.

So I went back the following day, when it was stocked, was there before and during the stocking. Place was crowded but I had a good spot...it was hot today, 85 degrees, maybe that had something to do with it but no one caught anything except for 1, a guy near me. I  didn't see anyone else catch anything and I asked many people, everyone was skunked....the only people catching anything were the carp fishermen, some guys next to me probably caught 10 while I was there....I had 4 rods setup, c-rig with powerbait and nothing....I had a feeling that might happen so brought a rod for carp, to beat the skunk, but forgot the bread. 

 

So I'm thinking the heat probably was affecting the fish...maybe even killing them?

Sometimes it takes the fish alittle bit to acclimate. Usually several hours or the next day would be best. Gives them time to get hungry too.

You don’t need a treble hook. A size 10 bait holder hook is sufficient. Assuming you’re going to be using dough. Roll it up in a small ball perhaps the size of a marble then insert the hook into the ball and press it onto the hook. That’s it. This is how we do it in the pacific nw, lol. Using a treble design for dough would be the equivalent of a “self-respectin’” bass angler using a spinning reel, lol. Just kidding. The treble can hold the bait maybe a little better but not by much. My preference for the single hook is that trout mouths are delicate and many times they will deep swallow the hook because it’s already halfway down their throat by the time you realize you have a bite. Removing a single hook is usually easier than a treble. However , if you know you’re taking them home it may well be a moot point.

A gold kastmaster or black with gold blade rooster tail are my absolute  go to for freshly stocked trout. Once they've been in the lake for a day or two is when I start using bait or more subtle lures.

A gold colored Mepps size 3 spinner, a black 3 inch powergrub, and tiny underspins paired with a panfish plastic work well for me, I would say a 1/8 rainbow glitter colored roostertail also but you said you all ready bought roostertails. Those lures catch alot of other species including largemouths and smallies as well.

Can they survive 85 degrees weather?

Not for more than a day or two. Water is rarely 85 degrees at the bottom of a lake though

So this lake is getting stocked every Thursday. I see guys on fishbrain catching 7 lbs trout. When would be a good time to go back? What about weather? Were going to have some rain and temps in the 50s soon.

Stocked trout is not my strength. Sometimes using something other than everyone else can help, I like jerk baits. That rain might help deter other anglers and relieve some fishing pressure

Mine either. The only trout I have ever caught was with my hand. So far that might be my best bet lol.

Not at this lake, I'm sure there's a couple in there, but not many. The place is known for its trout and catfish stocking, I saw some guys on fishbrain catching 7lbs trout so I wanted to try but its really poor water quality. The place is loaded with carp though. It's kind of the running theme at the majority of places down here which is why I do urban creek fishing. I'm also planning to start to target carp at the park lakes. It's kinda like ok, does the place have fish? If it does it's most likely carp, if it has carp it might have sunfish and if it has sunfish it might....have bass.

 

I enjoy catching sunfish, they are a hardy fish, have caught some real big ones too. Its amazing the places they can survive. 

 

All these fish were from ghetto urban creeks and the crappie was in a drainage ditch behind a apartment complex!

Stockers won't typically go much deeper in a lake then the holding tank at the hatchery for a few days...unless something pushes them deeper. That's something else to look for and if it holds true in your area, might get ya an extra couple of hits staying in that range.

Powerbait Trout Dough on a universal rig for pellet fed stickies.  Once they've acclimated, other baits are on the table, but the dough is similar to what they're already used to eating.

These works for me for stocked trout.

 

1. 1" curly tail grub in grasshopper pattern on 1/32oz  mini jig.

2. 1" tube in grasshopper pattern that comes with a 1/32 oz tube jig.

3. no 2. panther martin in gold.  I think it's 1/16 oz

4. Rooster tail 1/16 oz in orange pattern.

5. 1/8 oz Castmaster in Gold.
