Keefu13 Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 Hello all. I am looking to do a good service on two of my baitcasters. Just some info I just started fishing last year in April! I live in Japan where the waters I fish are murky to muddy. I fish mostly for snakehead with a frog over heavy cover or a chatterbait. I was wondering any tips or tricks or even some encouragement on starting this process. I have looked online and read on here some people say it is easy some say it’s not! I am not very good at taking things apart, but I am willing to learn! Also will this Shimano oil and grease be good for everything that needs to be oiled and greased? Sorry for the long post. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 Use a schematic and take pictures as you go. Have plenty of space to work and enough time to complete the job. Probably a couple hrs first time. I’m not familiar with those spray lubricants, but the shimano grease and bantam oil in containers are good. 1 Quote

I have two young ones running around so when I have two hours or so I will start! Upon looking further at this oil and grease think it is similar to the ones in America. It even has a schematic showing where the oil and grease goes in color. 1 Quote

Expand YouTube will be your friend. It also helps to take stuff off in order and place it down in that same order so as best you can, you just reverse the process when reassembling. If you watch enough reel break-down videos online you’ll start to pick up how folks do this. Quote

Need to study on what to grease and what to oil that's one thing I am worried about lol. Also if it is needed to degrease or not as I don't know much about degreaser products in Japan. Quote

Expand Yes, degrease. If you can't find actual degreaser, dish soap should do the trick as long as you rinse thoroughly with water afterwards and then rinse alcohol. Quote

Expand Depends on how dirty everything is but at minimum I would degrease the gears and any open bearings (although you may not have any). Quote

Springs usually stay put so you can remove those first. Quote

Not so much to know when or if to do it on a schedule, but to notice if one wasn't done. I'm fairly sure I did my Black Max this past year, but not so confident now -- if I had a notebook or put a sticky on the reel feet.... 1 Quote
