Just got around to getting all my casting setups for this year oiled/lubed and matched to particular rods for specific presentations. Actually had a "first" in quite some time - first time in over 10 years that I'll have a casting outfit with mono on it B) ...two, actually. Been a straight fluoro user for over a decade on my casting outfits, with the exception of a frog and punching setup of straight braid. I probably really only need one mono outfit, but since the spool was 600 yards, I figured I could live with a second one just so it doesn't go to waste - lol. I actually looked at the manufacturers date code on my last mono spools I still had, and those were from 2002

I think I might go buy a couple Pop-Rs and some Spooks to add to the tacklebox this year - lol.

I love mono because I change my line all the time and like the price and but mostly because I trust it not to break on a fish if I’m doing everything right. Poppers were among my most successful baits this summer, I was honestly shocked at how effective they were for me.

When I first started fishing about 8 years ago I used mono on a spinning reel and hated it. Coils everywhere.

A friend told me to try braid, I tried it and stuck with it. About two or three years ago I tried 15lb big game on a baitcasting reel. Line kept jumping off the reel, threw it in the trash.

This week I thought back and realized I probably didn't spool it correctly after reading such positive reviews about big game mono. Then I came across a YouTube video of a guy who showed how to stretch the line and the difference it made.

So I spooled up one reel with 10lb big game mono for squarebills and light spinnerbaits and 14lb BPS tourney tough mono that I have used for leaders. After spooling properly and stretching the line to remove the memory, I am much happier with how it handles now.

Our waters are frozen so just been pitching a casting plug around the house but it handles well and seems sensitive enough while dragging the plug across the floor. Can't wait to try it out this season and test how it does in real world usage. I did tie the line to the coffee table and walked about 25ft to the door and tried a hook set, the stretch wasn't that bad and my drag will slip with any more force anyways.

I will stick stick with braid to leader on my spinning set up, but leader knots have caused me problems here and there on casting set ups. Curious to try it out and see. I also use fast and extra fast action rods so don't think it will hurt the hook up ratio, maybe it will require a stronger hookset not sure yet.

For me kvd line and lure turns big game from a total pain to use into a decent line. I spray the night before fishing and then again the morning of but that’s probably overkill.

Big Game is the 150 grain .30-‘06 of bass fishing.

Nothing wrong with "Old School" which certainly works for you,

Catt and a whole lot more.  However, there are lines with attributes

that some will appreciate. Smaller diameter, nearly invisible and with

strength you can believe in are a few that come to mind.

I’m sure of that. I’m branching out somewhat as I progress (going to respool my Revros LT2500 with 20 lb Sufix 832 and a FC leader), but I say that if someone is hesitant to try new lines, you can definitely still catch bass on old school mono.

And it sure is inexpensive if you like new line on the reel!

I still use a lot of mono. I won't buy a dedicated rod for every technique. I make mine multi task. I may use a topwater on a rod for a while and then later use a spinnerbait on it. Mono works either way while floro is a bad choice for topwaters. I still use floro for soft plastics and jigs.

I run 12lb Sufix Siege on one reel for topwater, 65lb braid on 2 reels for flipping and frogs and the rest fluorocarbon. I like throwing jerkbaits on the same rod that I use for topwater as well, so that reel will get some other uses as well.

I would suggest picking up a Megabass Pop X and Pop Max. They're expensive, but they're some poppers that you can pop and they walk really well too.

I used to fish a lot of Silver Thread copolymer starting back in the late '80s, freshwater and salt, but never gave up on Stren before switching to Trilene XL a couple of decades ago. I still love XL, along with Yo-Zuri Hybrid, but have also fished a lot of Invisibraid for 20 years and have recently taken a liking to Tatsu. But I still use a lot of XL.

Whatever works.  :)

I use Sufix Siege mono for everything. from 4 pound on my UL setup to 20 pound on my musky rig.

I love mono

and it loves me.

I have always wanted to try Siege just never have.  Does it compare a lot to XL?

I have a friend that still uses one rod, and reel, the same one he used when we were kids.  He still casts the same dozen lures he did back then, and he still uses mono.  I asked him why he still fishes with monofilament, and he told me he doesn't trust new fancy lines with big names, he prefers what he calls  fishing line (Trilene XL.).  He still calls all my latest fishing technology useless money wasting gadgets, and he still catches more fish than me.  l almost told him Trilene XL. is monofilament, but realized all he would say is his fishing line caught more and bigger fish no matter what big name I made up.

I use Siege on spinning gear without issues but i would say its probably not quite as limp as XL, however, in my experience it is much stronger when tied with a palomar knot than XL is.
