I recently bought a used 650 SS. It has two "selector swithches" on the reel body. One is the anti-reverse swithch that I am familar with (at the rear of the body) . There is also a switch located on the bottom of the reel body, forward, at the base of the spool housing.

Can anybody tell me what is the function of this 2nd switch? I have several other Penns, and none of them have this feature.

How new is yours? I think (this is tenuous) that you might be referring to the silent drag/clicker drag switch. Click it and pull line off, then put it the other way and pull line off. It should be obvious.

If that's not it, then I don't have any idea.       jj

yes, it has separate anti-reverse and silent-dog levers

I don't think it's for the drag, but for winding the reel.

Wind it both ways - one way should be silent, even with anti-reverse engaged.

That makes sense, gents. I can't check it as I have no line on the reel, but should get some today. Thank You!

You don't need line to ascertain function. Turn the spool against the drag with your hand.    jj

Okay, further research and the question is answered___

"650SS to 950SS: An additional lever is located under the rotor cup that permits a slient or click option while reel is in anti-reverse." (from an actual Penn reels site).

An obvious audible clicking as I reel, which I had to hold right up to my ear to notice, as I have severly degraded hearing!

Thanks, everyone!
