Selling off reels/rods

Hey guys, as I first started fishing in 2018, from the get go I started buying anything and everything regarding fishing and have not yet to stop! Because I caught the bait money, I have amassed a ton of tackle and such throughout the years. Which leads me to my problem, I have a total of about 13 different rod/reel set ups and through fishing with all of them, I have picked out my favorites and find myself grabbing for that specific combo every time I head out the door to go fishing. I have a few set ups that hardly ever get used and compared to my favorites, I'm not a huge fan of them anymore. My question would be, once you guys figured out what brands or set ups or whatever you liked the most, did you sell off the ones that didn't make the list or hold on to them? I'm in a situation where I don't know if I should sell of the ones that don't get much use or just have them as back ups or such, or even just get the money to buy more of my favorite brands and such. Any feedback is appreciated, thank you guys!

Well Josh I'll give you my mind set. My fishing rods and reels are the same to me as my guns. I use them as tools even if it's tools of pleasure I don't get attached to them. I don't collect, I sell what I don't use or I give them away. Now this doesn't include family had downs. IMO

I agree with you there on the family hand downs, my first rod/reel I acquired was from my papa's old barn and I ain't ever getting rid of that one.

I mostly sell off really unused reels. Just like everyone here that buy too many rods and reels. I only sell the reels but not the rod because it is cheaper and easier to ship.

There are some reels (my collection) that will not be sold as easy as other but if I want somethingnew too bad, those might have to go too, (conquest 50, Daiwa pixy airy red, Daiwa alphas purple).

I don’t upgrade reel very often, though if I like it I’ll stick to it. I only have a few reels in each category medium heavy lure, jig and general only Finesse and Ultra Finesse that I have almost 10 setups altogether.

If you are sure you are done with them and not going to use them, then it's clutter. Sell them off and enjoy what you have. I think we have all gone through many rods, reels, and lures to find what we enjoy using. It's just part of the process of learning.

This is not only fishing related, but carries over to just about all that could reside in a garage. Having the mindset that if you don't keep something, that you may never be able to have one again, can keep you head high in clutter that you're very unlikely to ever feel the need to use, let alone actually using it. If you feel that way about some things, it's easy to feel that way about everything.

 

As a person that has more than once rented a 40 yard bin to clean out my 3 car garage, I suggest selling them or passing them along to someone that will use them sooner rather later if ever. Last year, I put up a notice on a local FB page that I wanted to give away about a half dozen old mediocre quality spinning rods and a few reels. A local guy said he knew of a family that would greatly appreciate them. He picked them up and days later I got a message from the kid's mother thanking me for allowing her kids to have some gear that they might not have been able to otherwise afford and how much they already enjoyed using it.

 

That meant way more to me than seeing them collect dust in my garage or whatever I could have made selling it.

 

I have another group of rods and reels I'm getting ready to do the same with.

Well, I'm a packrat and really don't sell anything, fishing stuff, guns or knives. Oh well, they'll all get passed down one day to my kids. Whether they keep them or not is up to their discretion but it's looking like my 5 year old son is a spitting image of ol Dad lol so I see them sticking aroung.

Well.....13 setups is not enough to fill the rod compartments on your boat.    You need a few more setups.  At least twice as many.

Enough for my kayak! Boat's not coming for another 5 plus years or so!

If there's any rigs that you might want to use in the future - or even swap out between trips - keep them...prices are only going to go up.

 

If I don't have a use for a rig, I sell it. As my UL rig was just too light for the kind of fishing I do, I sold it to a neighbor and used the proceeds to purchase my Light rod.

 

Note: I have 13 rigs as well - 10 for the canoe and 3 for shore-fishing.

Be sure you want to sell them.  You don't want to be kicking yourself the day after you get rid of them.

I can see both sides of this. 

 

I see fishing gear as toys, and have no problem parting with old toys to buy new ones...but I hate having to replace setups that sold.

 

I sold off a decent float & fly setup about 5 or 6 years ago, and when I decided that I wanted to do more  winter fishing this year,, I had to spend quite a bit more to replace it all.

Thanks guys! Posted one of my reels I'm willing to part ways with on the flea market section! Gonna keep that rod it was on. And then sell my other rod/reel combo as a whole locally.

Basically this for me. Ive changed out reels many times over the last few years. Have a couple that I've held onto for one reason or another. Some because they fit a niche or others because they wouldn't bring enough to be worth fooling with selling.  If I know there are ones I'm not a fan of and have found ones I am then those get sold and replaced. Nothing wrong with selling to upgrade.  Lotta guys do it every season.  I have a buddy that'll buy 10 every season then sell them all off at the end of his season. Do whatever makes you happy!

Only 13 set ups you have a Waze to go. I have one for every technique. Plus spares you can never have enough.

Sell them. You can ship rods USPS priority for around $12-15 in cardboard rod tubes as long as you meet their size requirement. Reels are usually $8 to ship.

Will look into how much they'll charge me to ship a rod, last I checked I thought it was upwards of 30-40 bucks to ship.

I’ve shipped 4 or 5 in the last several years and most I paid was $16
