Been wanting a 1911 for ever I just put the rock island 1911 GI on layaway where I work. We have a kimber and a Remington but went with the rock island for my first one. The kimbers are nice looking but it will live in a holster or safe not to be seen. The Remington is half the price of the kimber and the grip is crazy uncomfortable but the trigger is the nicest of the 3. The rock island just came in Friday so I snagged one up after shooting my buddies. Now to start stocking up on ammo for another caliber in today’s market.

I’m sure ill Be getting another 1911 but starting with the cheaper one.

i just bought a ruger american .45, it is my first pistol.  i literally just brought it home 2 nights ago.  next week i am going to the range with my brother.  i doubt i will hit the target much at first ?

i bought it for a "house gun". i wanted the 9mm, but you can't get ammo here, so i went to the .45 instead.  later on when i get my ccp, i will get the 9, but i have time to shop around and see what i like, and try some stuff out before then. i have lots of training to do before that.

I have owned a few 1911's. They are my favorite pistol for fun shooting.

Rock islands are hard to beat for the price.

Out of all of them, my current springfield range officer elite operator, in 45 acp, is my favorite.

Super accurate and fits my hands, near perfectly. It will also fire any ammo I feed it.

Kimber's just did not fit me. Never enjoyed shooting them. Plus the two I owned were picky about ammo.

Colts are nice, but only have a right handed safety. As a lefty that does not work.

We had a Sig scorpion version for the longest time I was gonna get that one a few months ago and when I finally said I was gonna get it after seeing it everyday and no one showed interest in it sold that day before I could get it on my lunch break. Tends to happen a lot I show interest in a gun or even gun cases or reels they sell that day. Kinda why I put the rock island on layaway so fast

Guess he had to try out his new gun somehow. ?‍♂️?

1911's are awesome. I currently have a Kimber Stainless II .45 and a Springfield EMP in 9mm. There are a lot of mixed reviews on Kimber's, some people love them and some have had bad experiences with them. Mine has been great, the finish has held up well and it isn't picky about ammo. Read reviews on Kimber's before you buy one though.  I've heard nothing but good things about RIA's for the money.

Clayton, I own a pile of 1911's....Colt's, Springfield's, Sig's, Ruger's, old USGI guns, and Rock Island's.

The Rock Islands are every bit as good as the rest in function, if a bit "unrefined" around the edges.

That being said, 1911's.....no matter who makes them are not as forgiving of poor maint., crappy ammo and mags, and questionable quality parts as the vast majority of modern polymer framed guns.

I'll give you some tips to get and keep that Rock Island in tip top operating condition.

#1: right out of the box take the factory recoil spring out, and throw it in the garbage, replace it with a quality 18lb recoil spring....Wilson Combat, or Wolff. The spring it comes with is supposed to be a 16lb spring....same as what USGI specs call for, but in my exp...it's a crappy spring, and the tension is all over the map, just eliminate it as a potential hang up point. A good spring is less than $5

#2: check your extractor tension, there's a million youtube videos on how to do it. MOST new 1911's come with the extractor tension too tight and will cause feeding problems until it relaxes a little on it's own. It can be an infuriating wait and process, so just check it yourself, and tension it correctly.

#3: if the factory mag that comes with you Rock Island works...great, but in my exp...they are kinda crappy mags. The best of the best 1911 mags are Wilson Combat 47D's, but they are expensive, a great budget mag that works flawless in ALL my 1911's are MecGar's, and they are usually less than $25

#4: LUBE IT. Drop of oil on the barrel link pin, drop of oil on each each of the two top locking lugs on the barrel, drop of oil where the barrel hood contacts the slide, drop of oil where the barrel contacts the barrel bushing, and a film of grease on the slide/frame rails. The wetter the better when new, and as the gun wears and loosens up, you can get away with less.

I have been a 1911 guy for 25 years, mine all run like champs.

Picked up my 1911 tonight already changed the spring. I grabbed two Pro mags for it but returning them tomorrow they wouldn’t function once loaded they wouldn’t fit in the mag well.

headed to the range Thursday on my day off to get some shots through it. Figured 100rnds to break it for first time should be good since I grabbed 100 rnds today with the gun.

I've had several 1911's... Like you I wanted one so bad 40 years ago but at the time all I could afford (with bells and whistles) was a Mitchell Arms. After that I got a stock Colt built in 1927 and carried that for years. Finally broke down and bought a "Custom" Kimber Gold Match in stainless. Bought some Wilson Combat mags. Got a top of the line holster (worn one out). Never had a problem with it from day one. Been packing for over 40 years.

Carried a Sig 938 Scorpion 9mm mini "1911" for a good 3-4 years before I switched to a P07 but still love the little gun. (other 2 are fathers and brother in laws).

Shot some kimbers, Dan Wessons and Ed Browns but the Dan Wessons are to me the top. I'd have to spend a lot of money to top a DW and honestly I'm not sure the minor refinements I'd gain would ever be worth the huge cost bump.

Purchased a Colt M45A1 since I have a collection going of USMC rifles. I build clone USMC sniper rifles and Raider m4 setups. M45 followed the Raider collection so it won out over the DW for that alone. I will own  DW one day.

I am a fan of the 1911, but I am a fan of my hybrid a little more.

I like most grunts have a warm spot for the 1911.

Last year I was on the hunt for one and it feels like I shot everyone known to man ?

Truth  be told, nothing felt as good as my issued one from years ago.  There was just something in the looseness and feel worked.

This fall I will be looking to replace my old friend ?
