I've built jigs in the past and I'm looking to make something slightly different over the winter, so I'm looking at building a buzzbait. Here are some of the items in my cart so far:

Aluminum Delta Buzz Blades | Buzzbait Blades | Lure Parts Online

1441 Buzzbait Heads (5pk) at LurePartsOnline.com

I also have skirts, rivets, and metal beads (for the blade).

My question is: They also have a double-bladed buzzbait head option and they have 3-bladed and 4-bladed plastic buzz blades. Do you all have more luck with the double-bladed models and/or the single-bladed models with 3 or 4 blades? My concern is that I'll have to reel this 3/8 oz. head in really fast in order to get it to stay on top of the water with a standard blade.

In addition, I'm planning on making my baits black. It seems like that is the most common color used. How does everyone feel about a black and purple skirt as a good all-around buzzbait color (I only want to buy one set of heads)?

I haven't built a buzzbait in a while but to my recollection the double winged blade came in 2 sizes. The smaller size was for 1/4 oz and the larger for 3/8 & 1/2 oz. You'll be surprised how slow the 3/8 oz ones can be fished and depending on how you bend the wing tips, you can make them go faster ans even slower still.

You can buy tri-winged blades now?

Those are the same heads/ blades I use for my single buzzbaits,  you won't  have any trouble keeping it on the surface. Also I wouldn't bother with the beads IMO they're useless weed catchers. I don't put them on baits I make and I remove them from ones I buy. I instead would buy extra blades as I tend to wear out alot during the year (I went thru 5 blades on 1 bait this past year). As for the plastic blades I'm not a fan. For the double arm baits you have to use the 2 prop aluminum as you need both clockwise and counterclockwise which aren't made in plastic. Would add that while their double arm baits are good I don't like the thin wire they use and prefer commercially a made one better. Finally your skirt choice should be fine. I've been using the same black/ redflake color for over 20 years.

Not a huge buzzbait connoisseur. But in my experience, like spinnerbaits, the surface area of the blade(s) has alot to do with lift and negate headsize quite a bit. Similar to guys burning half oz spinnerbaits with larger 5 and 6 willows.

I really like the single buzz in the two blade design, but I also prefer using a horny toad over a skirt- it just seems to cast and 'get up' better.

I spent a bunch of garage time tinkering this year and worked out a few buzz designs I like. The one below is a glass bead, flat head, super long shank, filed rivets for extra squeak with a sharp angle on the head to slide a toad on. I fish these in brush, timber, and weeds without a trailer hook. These work for how I like to fish buzzbaits, but there are a ton of different ways to go on the design!

Thanks for your suggestions and the picture. Visualizations help immensely. I like the bead too. I'm sure the glass acts a lot like those buzzbaits with knockers. I might try that.

Even if it's not clicking the blade, the bead really seems to help prevent the toad from getting pulled down the head when fishing weeds.

Food for thought!
