garroyo130 Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 For anyone who owns both, do you consider the SLX MGL a significant upgrade over the Fuego CT? I am considering replacing a Fuego with one to be used for casting smaller crankbaits. Quote
TBAG Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 I've not owned an SLX MGL but I did buy a regular SLX shortly after they released and already owned a Fuego CT. I ended up selling the Fuego CT to a guy at work and bought a couple more SLX. 1 Quote
DomQ Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 SLX MGL all day. Smooth reel and it looks very nice. It’s a fairly light reel and can cast bombs man. It’s great with light lures as well. The knobs on it are superior to daiwas knobs as well but that’s my opinion. 2 Quote
LCG Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 Owned both. SLX MGL is my choice. Don't have the fuego anymore. The MGL is very smooth and cast light weight baits very well. Both are good reels, I just feel the MGL is better. 1 Quote
Primitive fisherman Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 So you guys think the SLX MGL is a good upgrade over the Fuego. My question is the $10 over the SLX MGL worth it for the Diawa Tatula 100 or do you still prefer the SLX MGL? The rod setup I would put it on would be using 15lb Fluorocarbon and 1/4-3/8oz swim jigs Quote
MiceNReets Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 SLX MGL all day. It’s just a really fun reel to use and I prefer daiwa. Don’t get me wrong, I love my tatulas but man that slx mgl is just tons of fun! If you don’t have a big smile after your first cast and through out the whole day, then I dunno what to tell you. Ha! Chet C Posted January 18, 2021 Posted January 18, 2021 i was thinking of the slx xt for spinner baits. will the MGL do it any better, will the slx xt handle 3/16 of lures chet Quote

I can’t compare to the usdm version because I didn’t know there was a difference aside from the jdm version says mgl on the handle and not on the side plate and the usdm version says mgl on the side plate. I didn’t enjoy the regular slx or xt at all. Never tried the dc version but this mgl version just made my day. Quote

Ha! *SLX MGL 70 series for lighter lure weight applications - those that use for the more finesse side of things sure do like the reel ! Quote
kayaking_kev Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 I don't think there's much doubt, especially for the application you're wanting it for. SLX MGL 70 all the way, it's a lighter and just a better reel overall, not that the Fuego is a bad reel, but I really only go to that for stuff like frogging. I've had all the SLX versions and the MGL 70 is my favorite, and I've never had a problem with running out of line and mostly use it for cranking, but also use it for everything else, besides stuff like frogging. Unless you're a huge guy with huge hands and a heavy rod, go with the SLX MGL. On 1/18/2021 at 1:45 AM, Primitive fisherman said: So you guys think the SLX MGL is a good upgrade over the Fuego. I've owned two Tatula 100's and both seem a little finicky at times, especially with Fluorocarbon. A tougher question would be between the SLX MGL 70 and Tatula SV, I love both of them. 2 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted January 19, 2021 Super User Posted January 19, 2021 I will wager that two or more years down the line, you'll be glad you got the SLX. jj 1 Quote
