Im in Oklahoma so never freezes but gets cold and windy.

Ive taken up lure painting. Bought a 30pc set off Amazon for $20, all unpainted. 5 each of lipless, squarebill, deep diver, pencil popper, standard popper, and jerkbait. Came with eyes and split rings. Bought a can of primer and can of clear then 12 pack of acrylic paint. Some people airbrush them but we are just using brushes. Its pretty fun and my kids love it. I'm going to try my hand at some bluegill and craw patterns soon.

I'm right here close to you in Eastern Nebraska. For me, hunting is really my favorite...fishing is something to kill the time between seasons. Duck and Goose ended last week at my brother's spot (I wasn't able to go with him last weekend). Buddies own land on the Platte...we can hunt through first week of February.

I get really antsy after the Super Bowl...hunting season closes, still ice on the lakes...not much of a basketball fan now that my kids are out of HS.  February and March are tough times. I will likely get back to my 1972 Chevy K-20 project truck until open water. Brother and I are building a new blind...will probably work on that. I've already organized my fishing tackle, cleaned and oiled reels, got the boat winterized and squared away.

A few years ago I got cabin fever so bad I did a stretch test on various mono, co-poly and fluorocarbon lines to see which ones actually stretch more. First year I tested 7 lines, second year another 7 and completed 21 lines by year three. I would hang the lines on weights from our 15 foot vaulted ceilings.

Well, we moved and now I don't have the right set up to continue that test - so may have to figure out another experiment to do.  Have thought about a large tank and doing a sink-rate experiment on various plastics... or maybe I'll just watch paint dry until the ice melts and I fish for White Bass in April (the countdown is less than 100 days now!!)

Well, that'd go well with the old thread on plastic weight.

I should get going on the last canoe mods - been kind of a slacker the last few weeks.

slacking is a problem due to us having 3 months till we can fish so its easy to put off till next week, month. When it gets close to crunch time is when !!@@#$% happens for me.

Really all i have left to do is put new line on my and wifes reels and make a handfull of pike leaders. I dont own a boat so looking at the reels sittin in the corner on the rods waiting to be spooled up gets me saying yes later today i will and i say that everyday.

I play with Legos, Match Box cars, Play Doh, color, play Uno, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, put together puzzles and watch cartoons.  Sponge Bob is a regular.

I have the same problem in the winter. I actually just bought an airbrush, some paints, and some blank lures to start painting my own crank baits while watching fishing videos on YouTube to pass the downtime.

i worked out today, did an 1 1/2 hr of body stretching yoga and it was rotator cuff strengthing day and lat pulldowns then after that went for a 45 minute outdoor incline walk then back home to watch the Packers vs rams.

Picked up fishing rod and looked at the reel i need to spool and put it back down for another day.

I  called CalTip today to report poaching for the first time ever. My stepdad actually saw them while biking on the nearby path. I was at home.

He said he saw probably 15 of the bucket brigade fishing the creek which is closed to fishing between November and April. He was hoping to see me fishing there.

I asked if he noticed the No Fishing signs and he said yes. That's why I'm not there. He doesn't fish.

After some thought I called it in. If I can't fish right now they sure as heck can't, especially since many won't have licenses, will not be using artificial baits, will not be using barbless hooks, and will be leaving beer and corn cans all over shore.

I'm very surprised so many were doing it. There is no lifting of the rules because of Covid or anything like that.

And you know what? Screw the whole "they need to feed their family" malarkey I sometimes hear. Who doesn't? Steal from the grocery store and see how that works out for you.

The nice woman thanked me for calling.

There is nothing wrong with using barbed hooks. Poaching, littering, and otherwise illegal fishing grinds my gears and I'm glad you reported it, but the hooks part bothered me some. So what?

Barbless hooks are required in this creek. Barbed hooks are illegal, and artificial lures are also required. Why else would I care?

Tackle tinkering is always great.

I got lucky.  An e-friend just offered me a desirable fly reel for my time in exchange for spending his money and dressing up 5 of his spinning reels.

It's the rules in some creeks.  They haven't gone to that extent here, but the rules for any Great Lakes tributary are very restrictive in winter.  The thing is, the restrictions work.  The limit for rainbow trout is one.  It has to be 25" or better.  Let that sink in.  What ever they're doing on schplurg's creek has some purpose that is geared for improving the fishing.

For me its about time to start on some reel maintenance, and was going to just put my fish finder battery in a dry bag this season, but I decided to put together a battery box, ordered some parts just need to order the rest and decide which box I'm going to use.

Made a lure parts purchase. And started putting together stuff. I'm putting skirts on pre-poured jigs. The shirts come with o-rings that hold then on. Is there any benefit to tying the skirts with something like braid instead of using the o-rings they come with?

I bet @Siebert Outdoors could answer that. Band or hand tied copper I believe are options on jigs. No idea the advantages.

The skirts last forever and a bit more puff when wire tied. It's the only way to go, if you ask me.

I see. Makes sense, since I had a band dry rot and break. Wire wouldn't do that.

They say it is because steelhead come up creek from the bay every year and they've been trying to keep them from disappearing completely. Something like that. The creek is closed to fishing in winter due to this. Barbless and artificial baits when fishing is open.

The creek follows a pretty busy bike path so anyone fishing off season is asking to get caught. They asked, I answered :)

Your steelhead are alive and strong, though on the wrong coast.  Every drainage ditch that leads to the lake has them.

I spend the hard water months in my tackle room.

That's a beautiful, wonderfully organized tackle room. Might have to get something like that when we but a house in the next year or so.
