I recently picked up on jig fishing but that black max combo doesn't cut it with sensitivity. Some are the high end rods are not necessary. I've beginning to beg the differ. If you could afford only one good set up to start out with for jigging all around, what would you choose? I'm 5'4 and fish on a 10ft jon boat alot of the time but I also go out with a friend on his 21ft legend.

I bought myself a 7'5" Steez AGS Bottom contact rod and Steez SV reel for jigs and carolina rigs. It's my first truly high end combo, and being a MH-H it's a fairly specialty rod, also a first for me. I haven't got to fish it yet, but it looks like it'll be an amazing combo for sure.

If you can't swing something like that, don't worry. I've used Daiwa Tatula rods for a few years and I got my youngest son a St Croix Mojo Bass and my oldest a Dobyns Sierra, and any of those would be a massive upgrade over the Black Max combo.

Now to be able to make a proper recommendation, what size jigs are you throwing, finesse or not and what sort of cover do you contend with?

Makes a difference what kind of jigs you're throwing - at least to me it does.   I think basically you want something between 6'10" and  7'6" MH to H with a fast to extra fast tip.   There is a lot of leeway there.    For instance: for throwing quarter ounce Brewer Slider heads with a 5" paddle tail worm I like my Falcon Low Rider 6'10 " Finesse Jig Rod.    It is on the medium side of medium/heavy and it has a pretty fast tip on it.    When I'm throwing my home made jika rigs to the edges of deep weediness on main lake points my current rod of choice is a several years old Fenwick AETOS, 7'2" MH/ exhaust tip.   This is a much stiffer rod than the Falcon, but my jika rigs weigh in at around half an ounce before you put any plastic on it.   This rod handles that heavier weight better than the Falcon does.   If I'm throwing Biffle Bugs, I have an even stiffer rod - an All Star 7' Carolina Rig rod.  I. generally throw the Biffle bugs at half ounce or 3/4 oz and this rod will throw a half ounce Biffle Bug as far as you need to and you don't lose feel of the bait should it come over a ledge or something and drop unimpeded for a few feet before it hits the bottom again.

My rods for throwing 10" worms and smaller soft plastics at objects again fit within the primary perameters, but they are significantly different from the trio of rods mentioned.

You also asked about reels - I'm a Shimano guy.   I currently use a Curado 70 on my worm rod.  My jika rig I use a Chronarch 50,  I have a Curado 50 E for my Falcon Low Rider and for the Biffle Bug rig I like a full size Curado 200.  (Should I have any disposable income in the next six months or so these reel choices may change). I don't see the rod choices changing this year unless I break something.

It should be noted that the Biffle Bug rig doesn't see a whole lot of action, because the lakes I fish most of the time have a little too much vegetation and other techniques work better.

Had same problem, went with Dobyns Champion. Paired with a Diawa Fuego.

I chose a 735c since I throw a lot of heavy jigs(3/4-1oz) and have a 704 for lighter weights(3/8-1/2).

I received for Christmas a okuma evx b 7’-2” med. hvy which I’m planning on using for jigs myself. It’s a fast tipped rod that’s not too much money for the quality in my opinion.

Dobyns is making a guide train change to the Champ DC series rods and clearing them with $100 off price.

DC704C is a excellent jig & worm rod.

Either a Megabass Orochi XX Braillist or Tour Versatile....paired with a Daiwa Tatula Elite with a 7.x gear ratio.   30 lb braid, with or without a short mono leader..........your choice.

Welcome to the forum.....  It would help if we had a price point.  You could get opinions from $150 to over $1000.

My recommendations at various price points......

Shimano SLX 7.X:1 and a SLX 7'2'' MH Fast > around $150 at A.L.F.

Shimano Curado K 7.X:1 and a St. Croix Avid 7' MH Fast > around $400

Daiwa Steez SV TWS and a G. Loomis 7' 844C GLX>  around $950

There are ton more choices.  The three I picked will do the job of more than just jigs.  I also wanted to show how rods and reels can easily go from one price point to another quickly.   Good luck....

Well, not exactly. Here is the email I just received from Gary.

This is not true. I have made no change to Champions and not marking them down. I do have a few models that have an incorrect tip that I marked down $100. The tip is awesome it’s just not one I normally use. There’s several models. I know DC 794SB is one of them, but I don’t recall the others right now. If interested let me know and I’ll chase down the other models.

Thanks,

That is from the horses mouth. I got a notice he was discounting the DC rods $100, looks like it’s limited to only a few models.

Sorry to mis lead anyone.
