One argument against snaps that has always cracked me up is they give off a bit of flash, well what does a hook do? What I said about multiple line connections is true, as many try to limit them over concerns they will fail.

Why my reaction is strong with snaps is I fish a lot of vertical cover and on spinning gear with plastics you get a more vertical drop with snaps. It’s for the same reason they are used on cranks, they allow the bait more freedom of movement.

I use clips (not snaps) on a few rods, including my crankbait rod.  Split rings come off the baits, there's no value in extra metal hanging around.

I think there are two issues with clips/snaps that if you are aware of then you can mitigate:

1) most clips/snaps use small diameter wire. Smaller than the total diameter of a split ring or a hook eye. Problem is as the wire gets smaller it approaches a knife-edge. Small P-line for larger clips and tactical angler for smaller ones (crankbait) since p-line doesn't make one that small. The difference on flouro is more noticeable than on mono, this may be hooey but I think the flouro doesn't like the compression on a hookset and 'shatters' because of the thin wire.

2) Lines get re-tied more often when there's no snap/clip, so damaged line or old knots get cleaned up.

hmm, i bought mine at fleetfarm. Anyhow the only problem i encounter with them is snapping into a deep recessed popper where i end up having to give a slight bend to the clip wire. Maybe have to put a ring on the popper what do you do?

I don’t use too many poppers.  In fact the only one I own currently is a regular sized Rebel Pop-R and I can usually get a snap in there without having to bend it.

I hate the way a split ring gets hung up on the lures line tie where the 2 end meets on the split ring. I'd rather use a snap. Except for topwaters, I get rid of the split rings and tie direct to the lure line tie.

Oval snaps will solve your line tie problem as that is a HUGE issue.

Hello Kicker.

That's amazing.  I'm a Pop-R lover.  Throw lots of them.  Customize them extensively in the old Zell Rowland manner, but that's the one top water, that I tie hard to the lure eye.  Tight, no loop.

My belief, and seems to be mine alone - I want a Pop-R to pop, not to walk.  Typically on 15 lb Big Game in front of 30 lb braid.

Another funny thing, I want a bone Pop-R 99% of the time.  I sand all the finish off, put a little spar varnish on the lure and go.

Fishermen are strange beasts.

I prefer sliders, and think the wake is more effective than the pop - I've actually seen the pop turn fish away

I've used Norman Speed Clips on my treble hooked baits since they came out. Crankbaits are my confidence bait and what typically boats me the most; I throw them ALOT and change them often. I have only ever lost ONE lipless crank that happened to be an LV500. Slung it off on a hard cast, but quite certain I did not verify the clip was fill attached and closed. Actually retrieved it a dozen times before it sailed off and sunk into the abyss on a cast.

As far as the split rings go, they are unnecessary when using a clip. Years ago, I watched the action of crankbaits underwater in a pool (long before waterproof video cameras existed) with and without speed clips and with/without split rings. I saw no change in action. I did notice that with no split ring and the use of a speed clip, the plug would dive to depth sooner and quicker.

I am a huge advocate of the small  Norman Speed Clip on trebled baits.
