PhilSch Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Hi everyone, I'm new here and don't have any experience fishing swimbaits for bass. I'm looking for a reasonably priced rod to throw large baits such as the S Waver 168's and possibly larger for bass and stripers. What reviews I can find for the rod are good in general but I was wondering if anyone owns this particular one for swimbaits: JCT79HTF 7'9" Heavy/Fast. It is rated for 1-4 oz baits. I will probably get a Curado 300 for the reel. Thanks for your inputs! Quote
mcipinkie Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Don't see why it wouldn't work. Most of the people that post on fishing sites seem to have a thing with BPS tackle. My only problem with their rods now, is that most of them are ugly. I always thought the old Extreme was the best $100 rod you could buy. Still have a half dozen or so in various sizes. Liked the old Crankin' Stick when it had the cork Power Hump handle. Great crank bait/jerk bait rod. Some how or another Ott Defoe and Edwin Evers have managed to win a couple Classics on this cheap, crumby tackle. It's just so UGLY !! 1 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I don’t fish big baits with my carbon light combo but, use it for jigs and Texas rigs up to 1/2oz. Mines a 6ft9 mH with 8:1 reel. I absolutely love the carbon light rod and reel. It was probably my most used combo this last summer. I would buy another one in a second. Quote
PhilSch Posted December 30, 2020 Author Posted December 30, 2020 Thanks for your inputs guys. Based on what you two said I will likely buy the Johnny Morris rod but now I am also considering the Dobyns FR 795SB which is rated for 1-5 ounces. I suspect 80% of my swimbait fishing will be with lures under 2 ounces. Given that, would I be happier with a rod rated for 1-2 ounces and just deal with the heavier lures that I will use only on occasion or does the heavier rod make more sense? Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 30, 2020 Super User Posted December 30, 2020 The rods handle is too short and no fore and fast action will make this rod difficult to cast swimbait or glide baits the+distance needed. Check with Gary Dobyns 806 and IROD Gen III 794 Heavy or Okuma GS A Heavy rods rated for to 7 oz. Tom Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 31, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 31, 2020 I have the Fury 795 and use it a lot. It handles baits in the 1.5-3.5 ounce range the best. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 31, 2020 Super User Posted December 31, 2020 I'd look at the Irod Tom mentioned, I have 3 and 1 more on the way. Light, great action, look good, and I like the split Eva grips, oh and limited lifetime warranty, and awesome customer service. I've owned Dobyns as well, but prefer the Irod Gen III. Quote
