moguy1973 Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 It's just a way for the lure companies to try to make money. Look at Livingston when Randy Howell won the Classic on Guntersville. He won it with a red Livingston crankbait. Then they came out with one and put his name on it and called it the Howeller Dream Master. Does it catch fish any better than the one without his name on it? Nah. It just catches fishermen. Quote

JK Jake Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I understand what you're saying. I'm not exactly the same way but I do like some of the Ike rods, Rapala DTs, and Missile jigs. I don't know how much the man is actually involved in designing the baits but I also like a lot of the KVD plastics. I guess if you have the same fishing style or grew up in the same area as a certain professional angler you might enjoy fishing the same baits/lures. Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 30, 2020 Super User Posted December 30, 2020 You all like XCaliber signature lures with limited customize colors and balance systems. I don’t hold anything against pro making a signature % by promoting their name they earned it. Some lures are good other duds no different then all the lures we buy? Tom 2 Quote

That thing sells like hot cakes ever since they put the name “ned” to it Not sure if some of the older guys will jump in on this or not but that NED Style of fishing has been going on for years long before the term NED has come around. Guys have grub style fished broken pieces of worms, stick baits and straight tailed worms for years. Cut back bad sections and fished them successfully on lead jigs. It’s nothing more than grub fishing. The mushroom head of the jig may be more of a thing now days. This guy NED and his style of fishing has been around for a long time in river smallie fishing. Maybe was never popular in the Midwest. Out here on the mid Atlantic the older river rats were doing it before I’ve heard of it. A torn stick bait automatically becomes a Ned. The guy Ned has some good info out on it. But I really don’t think he is laying claim to anything. It’s something that evolved a few different way in a few different location. Now it’s everywhere and works. Which is a good thing. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted December 30, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 30, 2020 As others have said, I don’t buy anything just because somebody designed or advertised it. That said, I also could care less how a rod or reel is painted or polished, or if they “look good together”. And no, I don’t care if my pants match my shirt or if my shirt matches my hat. Luke Barnes Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Im a fan of Ike and I trust his judgement, because he made millions bass fishing. I have some soft plastics in either his color or ones he helped design and they have worked. I dont think he or KVD would attach their name to junk. I wont buy something just because it has their name on it over the exact same thing without it though. But like Berkley Flute Worms are all Ike designed and I like them. I like his morning Dawn color too, but ive never bought any hard baits he helped design because I'm a sexy shad or red craw lure guy. I use some Ike VMC hooks and what not too. But the only rod and reel I would get a sig model of is, well easy to guess, Ike. Fan boy and I love the paint jobs on them and the variety of rod action and power you can get them in. But at $250 for the reel, I'm plenty satisfied with my Speed Spool LFS, and not a KVD one! Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted December 31, 2020 Super User Posted December 31, 2020 I think the only thing I've ever bought with a pro's name attached was an Abu Garcia Hank Parker series 5600 C3 reel about 16 or 17 years ago. I didn't buy it because of the name, I bought it because it was recommended as a good reel. Quote

I don’t know what an MFL’er is, but I’ve been called worse I guess if that was your intent. @Spankey I guess you missed my point. Have a great day. Mike Sorry Mike I did not mean to insult you. Was really only trying to make fun of advertising, hype, Jersey wearing and weekend warriors who take it to the limit. Major League Fishing....... I sort of see MLF’ers might not sound real correct. My post isn’t or suppose to be about idolizing some pro fisherman(s) to the core and every sponsor behind any of them. Was about productive color patterns that have a pros name attached to it. In this stained river water I fish a couple DT baits are far more productive in Ike patterns (Rasta, Caribbean) than similar close standard DT patterns. But for the most part and in general the DT all work great. The Only point I’m trying to make. Same as with a Bottom Worm. In general I do well with these worms. But the Ike Morning Dawn is pretty darn productive for me. I’m certainly not trying to sell anyone on particulars and for the most part fish whatever works for y’all. Probably a coincidence I fell upon. Probably a slightly educated guess on a few colors. My only point. If a guy fills his boat with 6 KVD Spinning Combos and 6 KVD BC setup and the whole line of KVD 1.5’s, 2.5’s Square bills and divers and has a matching red hat to boot I don’t really care. It was not really where taking it. Bottom Hopper Worm, sorry. Quote

I was just trying to have fun in my own stupid way with some recent and past posts about buying equipment that had to match.
