The way we talk about bass fishing has changed over the years. When I first started, we called all hard baits " plugs". A " stick" was your fishing rod. Now, hard baits have become " crankbaits, " cranks" or divers. A " stick is still a fishing rod, but can also be used as a nickname for a fisherman. An example: " he's a good stick", meaning, he's a good fisherman.                                                        A " jig and pig" was always a jig with a pork frog trailer., and so on.                                          Can you guys think of any other examples of how bass fishing terms have changed through the years?

   Years ago:

   Medium power was medium action.

   Moderate action was moderate speed.

Braided line was nylon, and so was monofilament.

   Rods were "poles".

   Plastic worms were rubber worms.

Worm hooks were hooks you put a nightcrawler on.

What we call float n' fly was jig-n-bobber.

   Flukes were in the ocean.

   And finally ;

A Bass Master sang in a barbershop quartet.   ?      jj

There may be some regional differences at play here.  Growing up in Ontario in the 70's and 80's we used fishing rods.  Poles were not found out on the lake.

Oh Gawd, when I saw this I instantly thought of all the Walmart shopper videos. Not a pretty visual!

Back in the day when you talked about an open faced reel, you were talking about a Mitchell 300 reel.

Oh my goodness, y’all need to take a trip to the hills to hear some good terminology. One of my favorites is from some of the old hat that uses only baitcasters. They refer to spinning gear as “one of them underslung thangs”

Leaders were only for fly lines or steel for toothy fish.

I used to hear “artificial worms” a lot decades ago. And artificial lures, which is a bit redundant. And most certainly plugs. If it was hard, it was a plug, whether it floated, dived, popped or zig-zagged.

I heard “poles” quite frequently. To me, a fishing pole was a rod with no guides, like a long cane pole with the line tied on the end.

Back in the 80's (yes, I remember the 80's) we called it the "jig and eel" which is now the "jig and pig." The eel was made of pork rind and it was a bugger getting it off the hook after it dried on.

Spinnerbaits were called "the safety pin" bait in the early 80's. Bassmaster Magazine  had an article calling it a "secret bait" and the spinnerbait craze got started around 1985.

That depends (no pun intended). Do you remember the 70s? The 60s? ?

I remember when anyone who was anyone had to have a Arbogast Hula Popper, a Arbogast Jitterbug, a Heddon Torpedo and a Heddon Zara Spook in their little, painted steel tackle box. Whether you ever caught a bass on one or not (I never did), at least you looked like you did.

Just remember...star drags are found only on best reels. Like that fine Super 88 dual drag spincast reel! So if you have a star drag, you’re golden!

The only pole up here was the telephone pole I caught my lipless crank on with a backcast...?

Yes, I remember this ad. It was a fantastic ad for a kid who just started fishing but had no money.

And yes, I remember the 60's and 70's. I still listen to the Sirius radio 60's channel.
