Super User Spankey Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 6# Trilene XL “clear” or “clear blue fluorescent” or low viz green. Stuff can be bought at any store selling fishing related stuff. I’m not too sure about having them spool it up. I’ve heard of tackle shop horror stories when it comes to line spooling. 3 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I never trust spooling machines with my reels, but spool everything at home. I put the rod in a rod holder, and run the line through a phone book, sitting on top of a 5-gal bucket, and with a weight on top - I can slide the steel wedge around to dial in the amount of tension on the line. For fluoro on a spinning reel, the source spool goes on on the ground with the spool label up. For all braid and all line on a baitcaster, the source spool goes on an axle in a bench vise. In reverse without the weight, I can take the line off the reel, in complete control of the line tension, spool up the old line onto a line winder to easily dispose it, or even move it to a different reel. Here, I put the line winder in the rod holder, and I'm returning the line to the original source spool - this actually goes pretty quickly, because you can roll the original spool with both palms, and even level wind it by rolling one rim at a time. 1 Quote
Smells like fish Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 That type of fishing has been the majority of all my years spent fishing. I have found 8# Pline CXX moss green color to be satisfactory. 6# in that brand would be my 2nd choice. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 30, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 30, 2020 6 or 8 lb mono. I’ve had them spool my reels at the store, no more! My mom used to do it for us when we were kids and they always overfill Quote
Hollada Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 I can only recommend 10-15# braid (powerpro 8 strand) and a 10-20 ft fluoro leader. Straight Fluoro on a spinning reel is a problem waiting to happen IMHO. put enough cheap mono on the spool first so you only use 100 yds of braid. Flip the braid end for end every2-3 years. That’s my program across 12 spinning outfits. 1 Quote
ICFishing Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Depends on the rod and definition of small stream. Smaller streams with mostly smaller fish with the occasional 15" smallie id be using a 6'6" or 7' Medium action rod with 8 or 10 pound Seaguar AbrazX flourocarbon. Larger streams with mostly 8"-14" smallies with the occasional 18" smallie id be using a 7' Medium Heavy action rod with 10 or 12 pound Seaguar AbrazX flourocarbon. Depending on how often I am respooling (sometimes every week in the summer) I may put 12 pound Berkely Big Game monofilament on my creek rod to save a few bucks. Quote
