Kenny Yi Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 What is your go-to saying before you set the hook on a fish? Something that you whisper when you feel that first strike. I've always been doing the classic "There he is..." followed by a strong hookset (very Swindle-esque). 2 Quote

The Bassman Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I'm usually by myself so I don't do much talking until I have a fish close enough to talk to. 5 2 Quote
Dens228 Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I don't think I say anything........but, afterwards it's an F bomb in the following conditions. If I miss the set If it's really big If it's really little 5 8 Quote
TcRoc Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Same as above... its immediately after with a lot of cursing that echos thru the hillsides... all the cows stop there grazing and look in the direction of the murderous growls than farmer Joe looks to his wife and says “guess he missed the hook set again” 3 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 " Whoops, there it is " 1 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 “Oh” or “oop” or “ope”. You get the idea. 2 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 "There we go" I always fish alone and more amusing is my standard line that I repeat over and over as I'm bringing the fish to the boat if I think it's not hooked well, "C'mon, let's be friends! Let's be friends!" I've had a couple people on shore bust out laughing at me. Which is fine if I land the fish... 4 1 Quote

Same here. But once I started running the GoPro's talking to myself didn't seem as bad. Sort of like talking to my dogs. A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I didnt realize that I talk to myself when fishing , but you know how voices carry on water . Last year I ran into a couple fishing and they said they heard me saying " come on fish , bite" 1 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I usually say something like 'oh' or some other short semi grunt type word . . . Once I get a big brown bass on I'm almost always begging for them to "please stay on!" . . Sometimes they do, some times they do not. A-Jay 1 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 "Wait for it..." Gives the bass that extra second to get the hook placed properly so when I haul back/sweep - the hook gets set. 4 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted December 28, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 I’m a follower not a leader, so I mimic the pros and say “big un” or “giant” as soon a I feel the tap or see my line move. My accuracy in predicting the size while setting the hook is on par with their predictions so I have that going for me! ?? 4 5 Quote
Super User gim Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I don't usually say anything right before I set the hook. If I'm with someone and I hook up, I say "fish on" or "I've got one." If I can tell its something on the very heavy side then I also say "get the net." When I'm by myself and I hook into something big, the first time I see it I have known to say "whoa." The dog doesn't care what I say when she's with me. She just keeps right on sleeping. 3 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I have a very colorful vocabulary. And generally not short for words. But in all honesty while fishing it’s not to bad. I’m not the most religious guy. I do at times drag my butt to church. But I find on the water, Fishing is a real connecting time for me. I’m sure I’ve thrown around GD, JC, on many of fish. A lot of fish. Hope it doesn’t get held against me too much. But when the grandsons are around I got them saying “ Big’un”. We all say it regardless of size. Every bite is a Big’un. 3 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I like to stay silent, especially if it is a big fish, and then scare the heck out of my partner when the fish finally breaks the surface near the boat. 3 1 Quote

ironbjorn Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I'm almost always silent no matter what. Rather visibly emotionless, really. Even when I caught my PB not a single sound came from me other than the clicks of my phone camera, but my hands were shaking and my heart was pounding and racing. The best someone will get from me is when I'm fishing with either my best friend or fiance and all I say is "got one" after I've lipped and unhooked it. 1 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Nothing said before the hookset, but if the fish starts pulling drag after it, I turn into Roland Martin and begin repeating "Be a bass! Be a bass! Be a bass". Soon thereafter, this is often followed by a one word acceptance "Catfish". 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I don't I say anything on the hookset. If the fish is a nice one I will say "don't jump", or "stay down" while bringing it in. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted December 28, 2020 Super User Posted December 28, 2020 I'll say "Get the Net" for a good one or "Fish On". The bigger I think the fish is the calmer I'll say it, attempting to keep me or the net man calm. Quote
Smells like fish Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I will announce “got one” and then I start praying asking that the fish doesn’t come off ??? lots of please please please Quote
