BassKicker619 Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Quick question. Wanting to throw some Triple Trout and Hudd 6-8" swim baits in a couple of local So Cal reservoirs. While a few stock rainbow trout, several do not. Anyone regularly throw trout patterns in lakes that don't have trout? Main forage is shad, crawdads, and bluegill. Thanks. Quote
Dens228 Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 I've caught bass on a trout colored S-Waver where there are no trout. 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted December 18, 2020 Super User Posted December 18, 2020 Yes. Caught several bass on 6 and 8" trout Hudds in city park ponds/lakes that have no trout. Presentation is key. Have also caught bass at DVL using the same Hudds, and similar baits. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 18, 2020 Super User Posted December 18, 2020 Nearly every public reservoir get trout plants occasionally, few any more get regular scheduled trout plants. The big bass that target planted trout no longer rely on them for a food source. This doesn’t mean bass avoid trout colored swimbaits, they are not hunting the trout everyday. Put a swimbait in front of a active big bass and it may strike. Give it a try. Don’t overlook the fact bass eat 6”- 8” bass, carp and 3-5” bluegill and crappie, all the lakes have those. Tom. 2 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 20, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 20, 2020 Bass aren't discerning enough to care if a prey item is "suppose", to be there. If they're hungry, and a prey item presents itself, the important factors are will it fit in their mouth and can they catch it. 3 Quote

LCG Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 If anything they won't be used to seeing it, so it might get some attention. Worth a shot Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 21, 2020 If a bass met a trout for the very first time in its entire life, it would try to eat it. Even if it was resting, it will now think about eating that trout for the rest of their relationship. I’ve seen bass follow 5 foot water snakes for quite some time, they only look at other creatures with one idea in mind 1 Quote
