Sfritr Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I was getting all my gear together Saturday night for a tournament Sunday morning when I noticed "Where the Hell are my Boat Keys?" Horrified, I realized that two days earlier I had left them on the truck bumper when unhooking the boat in the driveway while my wife took my truck to the store. Needless to say, No Keys, No Tournament......... The F bomb heard round the world followed....... Question: can you have a locksmith cut a boat key? How hard is it to change out the ignition? Is it costly if you take it in? It doesn't look like it would be too hard to do. Quote
Under the Radar Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 At least you can remember where they last were : Bet the new key will have a duplicate hidden somewhere close by. A real bummer man I feel for you. Quote
Sfritr Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 The worst part is, I keep a spare truck key hidden on my boat in case I lock em in the truck. I will DEFINATELY now keep a spare boat key in my truck.... Good news is my buddy fished the tournament and only wieghed 4.3lbs tough day on the water. Quote
illumastorm Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 if your able to take the controls apart then you can get to the ignition switch to replace that, i took apart my controls on my old boat to lube the parts up since they were getting hard to move and the ignition switch was right there, so it would be easy to do if yours is the same. BassnMan Mike Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Awhile back I lost my one and only key to start my 1989 Champion. I went to our local locksmith and he was able to make me one in about 10 minutes and only cost me $15.00. You might want to check with your local shops, one of htme should be able to make you one. Super User fishfordollars Posted June 15, 2009 Super User Posted June 15, 2009 A dealer can make you a set. I keep one in my billfold, one in the console of my truck, and one set on a floating key chain that has my truck keys on it. Quote
TommyBass Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 On my Yammy they told me you have to have the exact key number to get another one from the factory. If you lose the keys and number then you have to put in a new ignition. Sounds crazy to me... just what they told me. Quote
DawsonH Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Then you should engrave the number somewhere it won't hurt anything but its easy to find. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted June 16, 2009 Super User Posted June 16, 2009 Not sure what make/model controls you have but look on the end of the cylinder where you insert the key and see if there is a number there. May only be a single diget but if it's there, the dealer should have a replacement key in stock. Quote
jamarkwe Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I never take mine out of the boat. Ever. same here my boat key never leaves the ign... Quote
HPBB Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 same here boat keys never leave the boat. trailer lock keys on my truck keys. so when I unlock the trailer I need the keys to move the truck I can't leave them on the bumper. I do this now because I did the same thing you did years ago years ago Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 You need a smoother riding truck. I made a delivery of fiberglass panels to Portland, ME. From Westport, MA, it's a 225 mile trip. When I went around back to unload my pickup, there was a pair of scissors on the bumper, where a trailer hitch would go, below the license plate. I had used them to cut plastic from a roll to put between the panels. I'll never understand how they remained there. Had they fallen off, I'd still be scouring my shop for them. Quote

Sfritr Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 Smoother truck or Smoother wife...... ( i didn't actually say that ) :-/ Quote
quanjig Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Being a locksmith myself, I can tell you that it's not a huge deal. Find your local locksmith that has a storefront location and they should be able to "impression" a new key for you. Same key for lockers as ignition?? If so and you have a lockable storage open, remove the lock and take it to the lock shop and have them make a key. Hope this helps Quote
HossFly Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 When my darling grandaughter and her "wonderfull" little friends lost my boat keys (i, too, used to leave them in the boat), i went by a friends' boat shop one day and asked him what my options were for getting a replacement. He handed me a shoebox full of keys and told me to see if any of them might work. Turns out the key that fit was for a boat 10 years newer!! Bass Tracker/QuickSilver controls in my case. Didn't even charge my for the key either!! It's worth a shot....ask a boat mechanic.....you never know what might work..... Quote
