Reddmann0 Posted December 9, 2020 Posted December 9, 2020 Hello, everyone. I recently purchased a 14’ aluminum jon boat and trailer. The boat needs painting and the wood on the transom was rotten. I’ve already removed the old transom and made a new one out of 2 pieces of plywood. I’ve coated the plywood with fiberglass resin and I’m allowing it to cure for a while (it’s been in the 30’s and 40’s this week). I want to lightly sand and paint the transom before putting it on the boat. What kind of primer and paint should I use to paint over the fiberglass resin on the wood? Also, the transom is 15 inches, but someone previously put a piece of aluminum on top of it to extend it to about 17 inches. Should I put that piece back on it, or leave it off? Most likely, I’ll never have more than a trolling motor on this boat. I’m adding a couple of photos. Thanks in advance for any replies. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 11, 2020 Global Moderator Posted December 11, 2020 I just got done redoing mine, I haven’t painted the wood (yet). I just had to take it fishing! I think I saw marine grade paint at ace hardware last time I was in there. I’m hoping to paint mine red if I can find one to somewhat match the original color (1957) 1 Quote

I’m not sure if I should put that makeshift transom extender back in it or just leave it off... Good luck with yours. Quote

The extender on your boat was most likely created to make the boat run shallower, I’d base your decision on what motor and where you fish. They also might have had a 20” shaft outboard and the extension was to marry that up 1 1 Quote

I did put the extension piece back on. Not sure if I should have, but it was on it before, so I put it back on. I’ll probably never run more than a trolling motor like the one that came with it... 1 Quote
