Dave0408 Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Hey guys/gals, Im looking to put a fish finder on my Predator PDL and was wondering if the 7sv was worth the additional cost. I’m thinking it is but wanted to check with the experts first. Thanks! Quote
Dens228 Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I had a 73SV that I purchased because I wanted sidevu. I recently upgraded to the 93SV for the bigger screen and couldn't pass up the deals being offered on it. I can tell you that on my kayak SV has helped me quite a bit in locating structure. I fish a lot of old quarries and the SV helps me find the pretty much exact location of those little humps of rock and other structure that I would be hard pressed to find otherwise. There is a particular quarry I fish probably 40-50 times a year. I found big bass holding spots this summer that I never knew were there in the past. Summary...........yes it's worth it. 1 Quote

Fishingmickey Howdy, May I ask where you like to fish around our neck of the woods? Canyon, Braunig, Calaveras, Choke etc. On 12/8/2020 at 8:07 AM, Dens228 said: I had a 73SV that I purchased because I wanted sidevu. Yeah, I don’t think I’m a good enough angler for EchoMAP money. I’m more in the Striker category and even that is out of my league;) 1 Quote

I’m more in the Striker category and even that is out of my league;) Hi Dave, I've fished all of the lakes you've listed. Choke canyon, I have heard is coming back strong. It flooded in 17 after a long bad drought and it is becoming like a new lake again. Canyon lake supposedly has hydrilla now. It has been a very clear, deep water, timber and rock limestone lake for the last 30 years. Braunig and Calaveras are power plant lakes. They aren't much for Bass anymore. back in the 80's and 90's they were awesome. They have stocked fresh water Redfish and Hybrid stripers stocked. The Red's are serious fun to catch. I go maybe a couple of times a year to them. It used to be run by SARA (San Antonio River Authority). CPS the public utility owner sold/contracted the access/concession rights to a private company. River trails or Unhappy trails and they have jacked up the entry/launch/camping fees ($17 to launch/fish my kayak) through the roof and have spent little to no moneys on improvements. I do most of my fishing around Austin. Numerous lakes around there too. That about all for now. Regards, Fishingmickey Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted December 11, 2020 Super User Posted December 11, 2020 Unless you absolutely cannot swing the extra $100, definitely go with the SV. The CV without sidevu is only 66% the fish finder the of the SV - I could argue even less. If you're fishing deep all the time, it may not matter much but let's be honest who does that? SideVu is great for locating brush piles and rocks along drop offs and other holding spots. Not only can you cover a lot more bottom faster, but the different view really gives you a lot better input in these cases. Quote

Do you think the 73sv is worth the extra $300? The 73sv will add maps. If you generally fish one or two lakes, you can make your own and you can download community charts as well on the 7sv and that will be fine. It's up to you if that's worth it. If you fish many new lakes and larger lakes, the maps can be quite valuable. If you primarily fish the same smaller lake or two most the time, then perhaps it wouldn't be such a big deal. And it's actually kind of fun to go make your own maps if you go to a smaller lake, although it is time not fishing. Quote

The CV and SV models both have maps on the Echomap, neither has maps built in on the Striker. The community maps are available for both models of Striker...I've downloaded the community maps to my Striker 63CV already. Quote

I just received my 7CV It's part of the Active Captain app. You download that to your phone or tablet, access the community and can download charts others have made using Quickdraw on their units. The Striker 6x, 7x and 9x units have Wi-Fi...so connect your phone or tablet to the Garmin and upload the Quickdraw maps to it. The manual has the 'how to' of how to do all this. 1 Quote

The 73sv would be the EchoMap, which adds LakeVu maps over the 7sv, which is a Striker which you'd have to map your own lake or download community maps. Quote

You can't tell by the model number anymore - you have to go by the name to designate whether it has maps or not. Garmin is getting tricksie that way. Quote

I've seen some places advertise the Striker as 'Striker Plus 73sv'...so you gotta pay attention there too. I know Garmin says '7sv'...but others are trying to trick you into the cheaper unit. I made an error - I have a Striker Plus 7cv...not a 63cv. Quote

To my credit I guess I do a pretty good job of filtering out junk vendors as I've never had this happen. The one thing to note is if a deal looks too good to be true, usually it is. Quote

The added 3 I thought meant inland lakes and the 4 meant coastal waters. Pretty shady to muddy the waters on those units. Quote
Dave0408 Posted December 19, 2020 Author Posted December 19, 2020 And then there’s the Vivid lol I think I’ll go with this one STRIKER™ Vivid 7sv With GT52HW-TM Transducer Quote
