Super User DitchPanda Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 Which one is the better option? Or which do you prefer? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 Haven't used Power Pro in several years. It was ok when I did but I do prefer the Sufix now. 832 has been my go to spinning reel braid for past few seasons. 10 and 15 lb does all the heavy lifting with 20 lb making a few special guest appearances annually. However, I've been injecting some Seaguar Smackdown Braid into the mix and it's making a strong bit to replace the Sufix when the time comes. Which might be a while, the new braids last and last and last and . . . . . . . . #goodthing A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 Don't wait, you will REALLY like the Smackdown. There is a notable difference. 1 Quote

Definitely a notable difference...about $15 a spool over the two I've mentioned! Only kidding...what do you like better about the smack down? Quote

Only kidding...what do you like better about the smack down? I got a spool of Smackdown as a gift that I'll be using on a spinning reel and I've noticed that it is definitely more supple than either PP or 832. MUCH smoother than the PP. Next year (when I have money again), I'll probably upgrade my two braid BCs to Smackdown. Quote
Mat_ski Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 They are completely different lines. PP is 4 strand weave, it is coarser, louder, but cuts veggies better. 832 is 8 strand weave, much smoother, quiter, limper but not so good with cutting veggies. Unless I am fishing thick vegetation 832 is my choice. Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted December 7, 2020 Author Super User Posted December 7, 2020 Well...maybe ill get some smackdown instead! Quote

Michigander Posted December 7, 2020 Posted December 7, 2020 Love Smackdown on my spinning reels, not so much on my casting reels, especially for pitching. It seems to stick to itself which isn't an issue for a normal cast but is for a short pitch. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 Ran both lines for the last 10 years on a majority of my spinning outfits, up until just 2 years ago. Both are good lines, but I personally favor original PP, especially in the smaller sizes. The last two years I've ran several outfits with YGK SS112 Sinking Braid, and for bass related applications, I'd take it over the other two in a hearbeat. Haven't tried Smackdown, and doubt I'll try at this point. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 I had 15# Power Pro on a spinning rod for around 5 years. 5 Years ago, I loaded it with 20# 832, and it remains. Braid is so overkill and lasts so long, I really haven't had a reason to respool with anything else. As far as preference between the two, I have non - both have worked beyond my expectations. In both cases, the color faded a bit, but after a month didn't fade any more. 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted December 7, 2020 Super User Posted December 7, 2020 I used to use PP for quite a while too but one time they were sold out so I bought the 832 instead. Since then, I've used the 832. Interesting opinions on the Smackdown. If its that much better than the 832, I'm gonna have to try it too. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 832 for me I didn’t like pp never tried smack down. Quote

On my 7' ML Ned Rig I am running PP #8 lb. Hi-Viz Yellow to InvizX #6 lb. leader and I like that set up a lot ... I could easily substitute #10 lb. PP as a main line for my Ned Rig and still be happy with it . 1 Quote
waymont Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Both are excellent lines. I use both, but when I go down to 8 and 10lb I prefer PP. I use both 832 and PP in the 20-50lb strengths, and love both of them. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Pp for me. Never used the smack down and probably won't. Just dont see the need but have no doubts its likely better. Pp hasn't failed me or my buddies and I'm used to it so ignorance is bliss! 1 Quote
LCG Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Been using 20lb 832 on my spinning set up for a year now. Color fades, but good line, casts well, and 0 wind knots so far. Quote
TcRoc Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I run both . Think it may always be a mix of them.. want to try some smackdown as well. Quote

Okay, that makes sense to me, but for those that want to "kick it up a notch", I think Smackdown will surprise you. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 8, 2020 Super User Posted December 8, 2020 btw, my family is from McNairy Co., and I spent my summers on my grandfather's farm. With a fly rod one day below Pickwick Dam, caught TN tarpon (skipjack herring) as fast I could land them. Sufix 832 is definitely choice for spinning tackle. Another really nice thin coated braid is Florida Fishing Products. I fish Sufix down to 6-lb on inshore UL, normally 15-lb inshore spinning, and even baitcasters with 20-lb 832. The new generation of Japanese braids are shocking. YGK Upgrade in 0.17-mm is 22-lb test. Quote
The Maestro Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I liked 832 but prefer original PP. Last year I tried PP Maxquatro and prefer it to either in applications that don't call for heavier braid. The 50lb is so ridiculously thin and manageable. I picked up some 20lb for spinning this year. Quote
tander Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I have used PP for years. I use the 10# test on my spinning outfits and 50# test on my frog/jig rod. There may be some braid better, but I haven't had any trouble with PP. Quote
