Bostonbean1313 Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Hey all, Im in the market for a new boat. Im leaning towards a new aluminum deep-v boat, most likely a Lowe as it fits my budget. I mainly bass fish, but live on the coast of the pacific ocean. I want a boat that can do both if its worth maintaining saltwater usage. I do have a 12’ aluminum boat with a 4-hp motor. Cant get to spots quick but can beat it up in saltwater. Should i get a deep-v to fish both bass/bay or get a mod-v for bass and 12’ strictly for the bay? Hard to spend 20-30k and put it right into yhe saltwater. I know its probably personal preference but if anyone has any insight from experience Id appreciate it. Thanks! Quote
NYBasser Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Take a look at Lund boats. My buddy recently purchased a Lund 1600 Fury and he has had no problems with using it in both saltwater and freshwater. Just make sure you purchase a boat with a galvanized or aluminum trailer if you plan on dunking it in saltwater. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted December 3, 2020 Super User Posted December 3, 2020 My boat is for sale and You'd really only have to worry about replacing the trailer if you're using it in saltwater. https://www.skipperbuds.com/inv/2013-Lund-2010-PREDATOR-SkipperBuds-Volo-B19249/ Quote

I guess i should have mentioned the weather hear can get nasty and the wife needs a WT. Also, I think id like to get a 75-90 hp for when Im able to fish Clear Lake or other big lakes. I appreciate the response NYbasser. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Get the biggest motor the boat is rated for if you can afford it. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 3, 2020 Super User Posted December 3, 2020 The V will give you a better ride and handle rough water better. The semi will give you a more stabile fishing platform. 1 Quote

Looking for something $20-25K. Nice boat though! I guess a big question is...is it worth using a brand new aluminum boat in saltwater? Even with routine maintenance after being in the saltwater, i feel that salt will eventually get to an outboard and trailer. Quote

Corrosion is prevnted by something called a sacrificial anode and it's mounted on the outboard. There are a lot of large ocean going aluminum boat manufacturers. They must know something. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 3, 2020 Super User Posted December 3, 2020 Hey @Bostonbean1313, Most of my boating is in a bay on the opposite coast from you and was pretty much in the same predicament as you're finding yourself in. I went with an Edgewater 158 cs - https://www.ewboats.com/boat-models/heritage/158cs/ and will plan on dropping in lakes in the fall. Good luck with your decision. 1 Quote

Im still pretty new to boat ownership and understanding the part of an engine. That info gives me more confidence in taking a boat in the salt as long as i baby it and take good care of it. Thanks for the info! Quote

That has always been a nice boat. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted December 9, 2020 Super User Posted December 9, 2020 Did you move south to ocean water or north to big laskes Quote

Not enough room for all their crap in the Lund. Another option I'm considering is a Triton or Ranger multi species rig. From a financial standpoint, I can get more boat for less money with the Robalo Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted December 9, 2020 Super User Posted December 9, 2020 What waters are you fishing these days? Bass or a mix. Would a Lund Baron work? Quote

Same as before. Northern IL, Southern WI, and Sturgeon Bay The Baron has too much freeboard for my liking 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 10, 2020 Super User Posted December 10, 2020 A deep V Hull the stern is still V whereas a modified V the stern plane surface is nearly flat. Tracker style bass boats are often referred to a modified V in lieu of flat bottom Jon boat, both have inadequate free board height for the ocean to be safe. If you mean the bays and not coastal ocean then the freeboard height can be lower depending on wave height. Aluminum multi species boat popular mid west should fit your needs. Tom Quote

Thanks for the info! Anodes protect from corrosion due to electrolysis. Salt water corrosion is still a problem no matter how many Zink anodes you have. Rinse the trailer, boat, and flush the motor with fresh water after each use and an aluminum boat is fine. You see more aluminum boats used on the ocean in the Northwest where they are very popular, and more fiberglass as you go south on the West Coast. 1 Quote
