Super User whitwolf Posted November 28, 2020 Super User Posted November 28, 2020 In 2002 I passed my first kidney stone. I passed 26 more in the next 4 years. After that I followed all restrictions and have lived kidney stone free since 2007. I passed tiny ones the last 2 years but there was none of the pain usually associated with the normal experience. The last week has been miserable. I have had a standing order for pain medication for years now and it came in handy this week. At 1:48 this morning this one greeted me. It's all of five millimeters. Back to the urologist as soon as I can get an appointment. Water, water, and more water. 1 Quote

Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 4, 2020 Super User Posted December 4, 2020 I know a lot of people who had them, thankfully I haven't experienced the "pleasure" of getting and passing one. I feel for ya @whitwolf. Not to sound ignorant, but what causes them? Is it a dietary thing to avoid? 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted December 4, 2020 Super User Posted December 4, 2020 No experience with this Personally, However I remember growing up, my uncle was sharing his experience with passing a stone to my Dad and the rest of the family during a holiday dinner. It was quite a story, one that didn't sound like fun. At the end of it my mom felt the need to contribute. "Try Giving Birth". A-Jay 2 2 Quote

OCdockskipper Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 I get one about every other year or so, the worst was the very first one. That one kind of paved a path for futures stones to make their journey with less struggle, creating uncomfort as opposed to pain. Starts with slight back pain, kind of like I strained a muscle and works itself around the side. It is funny when you "ping" one off the side of the toilet. One year I saved one and gave it to my brother-in-law for Christmas. He had it in his hands, turning it over, trying to figure out just what it was. When I told him, he threw it outside and washed his hands for about 15 minutes ?. For me, the doctor said I had a propensity for them genetically & that they were caused by dehydration (as TNRiver said, sugary drinks or lack of water). After the first one, I switched to Propel and backed off of caffeine. Whenever I get one, I can look back and see a few day period where I either indulged in a few colas or sweated a bunch without completely replenishing the fluids I lost. 2 Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 13, 2020 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 13, 2020 Yup, been there, done that, have the T-shirt. Extremely painful. I vomited outside the hospital the pain was so severe. On 12/4/2020 at 7:06 AM, Jigfishn10 said: Not to sound ignorant, but what causes them? Is it a dietary thing to avoid? It's a combination of things. Lack of water is the primary cause. My doc said I should be peeing 2 liters a day, which means you're drinking A LOT of water. Caffeine is another cause, both coffee and soda are really bad for you. Other contributing causes are dark green vegetables, berries, sport drinks, and chocolate. For me, I was drinking coke, coffee, and Gatoraide (no water), and eating spinach salads every day. As they say, too much of anything is bad....except water. On 12/4/2020 at 7:58 AM, A-Jay said: "Try Giving Birth". The ER nurse told me she has both given birth and had kidney stones, and she'd rate birth at "7" and stones at "10". I have to admit, the whole "pain scale" takes a major recalibration once you've had kidney stones. 2 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted December 13, 2020 Super User Posted December 13, 2020 My son was was bounced from Marine OCS because they found he had a history of stones years earlier......truly disabling! 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted December 13, 2020 Super User Posted December 13, 2020 Never had one thankfully. Remember as a child playing around in my uncle's closet and finding a little jar with a gravel in it so took the jar to him asking what was so special about this gravel. He said I'm keeping it locked up in that jar so it never returns back to where it came from. My Aunt explained it to me many years later. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 16, 2020 Super User Posted December 16, 2020 I’ve had lithotripsy, lazered stones and one basketed. The pain is so intense I threw up. My Dad had the same issue. It’s difficult to get to the ROOT of the cause. 1 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted April 11, 2021 Super User Posted April 11, 2021 I passed my first stone at 16 years of age. I'm 45 now and have passed 35 with one being 6mm. I have 8 in my left kidney and 7 in my right(1 is 8mm). I've had 9 kidney doctors and the conclusion is for me is it's genetic. I drink a minimum of 120 oz of water a day. I dislike taking meds but when a stones gets to moving it's Percocet, Soma, and Flomax time. 1 Quote
