New to Megabass baits....but I've really been doing well on the 110 and 110 Jr. the last couple of weeks. On one of the 110s I recently bought, I just realized there is no split ring on the front eyelet. My other 110s and 110 Jrs. all have a split ring on the front eyelet. Is this just a mess up on the part of MB? I can easily put a split ring on there (though I'll have to order some of the oblong ones they use because all I have are normal round ones). Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to mess something up that was by design, if I put one on.

I've had a few like that also . I was told that the baits that were originally intended for the JDM market don't come with rings, the USA models do.

In any case , MB was happy to send me a few rings. They are super light.

FWIW, I take the split rings off just about all my cranks and jerkbaits because I use a snap*. I've got a whole collection of split rings now.

Reason I do this, when I start throwing hard baits my ADHD kicks into overdrive and I do a lot of swapping baits to try to find the one they want that day.

Notes

  1. If you do this, DO NOT use garbage snaps with the pot metal keeper section. Treat yourself to a nice snap that locks to itself like VMC or whatever.
  2. Don't use a swivel because too much extra mass off the nose of the lure will get you tangled up in the hooks and, with jerkbaits, will really affect how it sits on the pause.
  3. Also check your knot, like, all the time, even though I personally think that it's easier on the knot to tie to a snap instead of trusting that the split ring cut ends won't chew it up.

Thanks for the responses!

Is it ok then to throw one without a ring if the JDM ones don't come with one? Seems like the darting action would be a little better with a ring, but like I said I'm fairly new to jerkbaits, so I don't know. I don't necessarily have to have one on there unless it hampers the action not to have one.

And galyonj, I get it...this morning I was out for a short time on the pond, just one bite on my first color (a sexy shad). Switched to something a little more translucent for the last few minutes I was out and it was like someone flipped on a light switch. So there is some benefit to the color ADHD thing sometimes.

I'd say that there are a lot of days where minor adjustments like that are all it takes to get a bite fired up.

My problem is that I don't have enough useful experience on the stick to know what adjustments I should make, so here's what I do:

I walk up to the water, draw back as hard as I can, and throw everything I own into it in the hopes that a fish bites something. :D

I would never use a snap on a stickbait personally.  I always use a split ring.

Dunn's usually has some of the Katsuage hooks for the 110 they may have the rings as well, If not try to match the size.

I would call or Email MB USA. They will probably send you a few.

It's a jerk bait, fellers.  Even a high quality jerk bait like the MB 110 varies.  It's up to you how you want it.

Regardless of what brand, and I think I have almost all of them, I generally end up tinkering to get my  lure to work the way I want it to.  Sometimes I add split rings, sometimes remove them. Heavier hooks, lighter hooks, Suspend Strips.  I don't think there is a lure that you can change to suit what you want more than a jerk bait.  I've got a treble hook box with almost every brand of treble hook made just to make jerk baits work the way I want.

Any size 2 ring should be fine and MB uses regular round rings, not ovals.  Like was said previously, the ones intended for the Japan market usually don't have them on the front.  I don't think there's anything 'special' about the rings MB uses, other then them being flat black as opposed to silver or metallic black.

A snap would be fine too, but I would probably jut put the split ring on so it's the same as the rest of your jerkbaits...That way you don't need to worry about adding or removing a snap when you use or switch from that single bait.  I have a few that came without rings too and I put rings on them for this reason.

I just got 6 in without the front split rings too. Thanks for the info on JDM/USA difference with split rings. I will email Megabass usa for the rings.
