billmac Posted November 22, 2020 Posted November 22, 2020 Nothing controversial. Just a little bit of nostalgia from my childhood. I miss wading the rivers for fish. I practically grew up waist deep in fast moving water. Throwing inline spinners while wading rapids for smallmouth. I usually started in May, as soon as I could safely tolerate the temperature of the water (New York). Tons of smallmouth, with lots of shiners thrown in. Occasionally a rock bass, walleye, or even a muskie! I could do it now of course, but with work, family, a boat, and arthritis in the hips and knees I probably won't be doing much of it anymore. Those were the days. 3 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted November 22, 2020 Super User Posted November 22, 2020 I never waded for anything other than trout - but it was always fun. Little stream near my childhood home in Worcester, MA - runs through Kirk's Woods just north-west of Indian Lake for anyone interested who's in that area. Brookies and Brownies Straight River just south of Park Rapids, MN - Rainbows and Brookies there. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted November 22, 2020 Posted November 22, 2020 I go to a small creek in southeast Ohio a few times a year to wade fish, this creek is clear enough when I take my fly rod I can hook a smallie and watch it run between my legs! It is absolutely hilarious watching me try to dance out of that, so I have been told! ? Quote
Armtx77 Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 I still do a good bit of wading. It is one of my preferred methods. It forces me to slow down, look at the water and really match the hatch. Quote
MGF Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 My wife and I do quite a bit especially on hot summer days when we're too lazy to load up the boat or canoe. Quote
throttleplate Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 A little nerve racking when wading and big snapping turtles come up to me and sit in front a foot away watching me and i them. Wife caught one last year as it went for her bait and got hooked. Beavers sit as close as 10 feet from me when i am wading and they also chase my top water lures causing me to reel in as fast as i can. They just sit in the shallow or shoreline and munch away on vegetation. Quote
Steveo-1969 Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 I am very fortunate to live near a river that has lots of stretches good for wading and if the water level is low enough to safely wade then that’s what I’m doing. Shorts and sneakers when it’s warm enough. Chest waders when it’s cold. I appreciate the fact there will come a time when I physically can’t wade any more and don’t take it for granted! 1 Quote
