Johnt1969 Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 Hello all. I’m a new guy to the forum. I come to Ft Lauderdale quite often for work and I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to find things I enjoy doing around there. Next time I come I’m going to bring some gear. I’ve been hunting on google maps for canals or small lakes to do some shore fishing but it’s difficult to determine where there is good access. I’ve seen the Weston area mentioned a few times. Would anyone be willing to share some details on good fishing spots with access for non residents in the area? Thanks, John Quote
Solution ArthurLK11 Posted November 22, 2020 Solution Posted November 22, 2020 Are you strictly after largemouths or into peacocks as well? Quote

I’ll fish for anything. I just got back here for 6 days. On the way out of the airport we stopped at a pond and I gave the other pilot my heavier rod to fish for bass. I took the Ultralight, put a crappie bait on and caught some Mayan Cichlids. Who knew those were here?!?! To answer specifically though. Either or. I just like to catch fish. It would be cool to catch a peacock. I’ve never seen one other than pictures. Quote
bostonsox2904 Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Check out google maps! Start with parks and shopping centers with water around/through it. I used to fish the area and would scroll through google maps and save GPS coordinates to try out. Weston, Davie, Sunrise, Coral Springs, FLL. They all have water access and peacock bass, among many other species. 1 Quote
Johnt1969 Posted December 30, 2020 Author Posted December 30, 2020 What are the lures of choice? I had about 30 minutes before dark to fish. I just picked one of the small lakes with some parking next to it. I threw in a Texas rigged pumpkin senko and got a few bites but didn’t land anything. The lack of light and bug bites stopped the fun. I’m going to head back tomorrow. Quote
bostonsox2904 Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Senko is always a good choice and i've caught my fair share with them. People also like the culprit curly tail worms with a bullet sinker. I also like mini brush hogs, flukes, and paddle tails for soft plastics. My secret weapon was the Yozuri 3DS minnow and the small Yozuri pins minnow. 3DS is best with a walk the dog retrieve and it's an absolute killer. Same goes for the zara spook jr topwater bait - especially good in the morning and evening. Those are my go-to's when fishing the South FL area. Just cover water and try new spots, and you'll find fish no doubt. Quote
Captain Phil Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 My son lives in Weston. He and my grandson, fish those lakes regularly. They catch a lot of bass on plastic worms and small bass colored swim baits. They also catch fish on Heddon tiny torpedos. The water in those rock pits is clear, so they use light mono line. Those lakes are also deep. The best fishing is where you find debris on the bottom. Look for points and canal and culvert junctions. Pads are always good. Some of those fish could be large, especially this time of year. Quote
Johnt1969 Posted December 31, 2020 Author Posted December 31, 2020 Thanks for the tips. I was able to get out for a couple hours yesterday. I get the lake at the Residence inn and got one small largemouth on a spinner. I also went to a lake at Emerald Eststes Park. That lake bottom was completely covered in slime algae so it was difficult to fish. I was only there for a short time but I saw a lot of big fish. My lures kept getting fouled up in the slime algae and I didn’t get any bites on top water for the short time I was there. So far I’m not killing it. But it’s really nice to be chilling and fishing. So I’m not that worried about it. I’m heading out again tomorrow morning. I’ll take those tips with me and see what happens. thanks. Quote
