sideways2 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I found this for $100... thinking it's a pretty decent deal coming with a second spool. Any reason why I should not go with it?? Daiwa is kinda hard to find at decent prices in Canada ... to put things in perspective these are the other models... Revros $70... Eliminator $110... BG $135... I appreciate the input!! Thanks!! Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted November 19, 2020 Super User Posted November 19, 2020 You don't want that one, its an old model. The LTs are the current models. Before this whole corona mess you could get them for 60$ and you could get the Fuego which is basically an Exceler with mag seal for 70$ both on eBay. Now the Exceler LT is going for about 80$ and the Fuego for about 100$ which is still a decent price. The mag seal keeps water from getting under the rotor and into the AR clutch. IMO its worth extra 20$ especially if you fish in rain or want a little protection from spray when your running with the rods on the deck. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 I will be only shore fishing... no boat purchase in the foreseeable future lol!! Quote
Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted November 19, 2020 Super User Posted November 19, 2020 If your not planning to fish saltwater you can get away with not having the mag seal. I love to fish in the rain and its nice to be confident that water isn't getting into reel. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 There is also a Ninja BG, Procaster and Regal Xia for $85... Lots of what is called 16 and 17's... Joinus and Crest... and Mission's to on the 'bay... There is pretty much nothing available in Canada... even on Amazon most is out of stock... Quote
newapti5 Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 It's always the BG. It easily beats Daiwa's other sub $200 spinning reels. The quality, components, smoothness, durability... all of them are way beyond the $100 price point. Unless you want some weight loss, then Fuego LT would be a good choice, or the more expensive Tatula LT. I feel that Fuego LT is a threshold in Daiwa's LT reels lineup; you starts to get some decent products above that. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 21, 2020 Author Posted November 21, 2020 OK... so other than it not being a current model and not being sealed... that's it?? I'm rebuilding so I'm looking for bang for the buck... the spare spool gives me a second option... AND which could potentially lead to me grabbing a baitcaster this spring as well... that's an added bonus to me!! I only have so much funds put aside LOL!! Quote
Russ E Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 I love the exceler. Very nice reel for the price. $100.00 is way too expensive. You can buy them nearly anywhere for $80.00. If you wait for sales, they can be had for around $60.00 Quote
sideways2 Posted November 21, 2020 Author Posted November 21, 2020 Remember I'm in Canada so there is about a 25-30% exchange... so $80US is $105CAD And if my reading is correct no new Daiwa's come with spare spools these days... Quote
Russ E Posted November 21, 2020 Posted November 21, 2020 An older model is no longer worth full price. I would not pay more than $50.00 American for it. I am curious why you need an extra spool. Every extra spool I ever recieved with a reel ended up in my junk box. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 21, 2020 Author Posted November 21, 2020 All my fishing will be done from shore either the river or at a few local lakes... I use two different test of line... either two mono or a mono and braid. Granted I can buy two different reels but to put things in perspective a Revros will cost me $80.00 here in Canada so two is $160.00... if I get a spare spool I can still outfit the two tests I like using and put the remaining funds to better use. See what I mean?? I just edited to add this comment... I have nothing... I'm coming back to the sport so I'm in a rebuild. I'm trying to keep this rebuild under $500ish... so $100 each... spinning reel... spinning rod... casting reel... casting rod... tackle... that's my goal. I already spent $80 in lures yesterday that I don't even have storage for LOL!! I'm pretty sure I can grab some rods cheaper than $100 as I have lots of options here... unlike reels which is either Shimano or come from Pure Fishing. I really like Daiwa for a spinning reel. Casting reel I'm not limited to Daiwa as I've had Abu, Shimano, Quantum and Browning in the past. I welcome any help... thanks!! Quote

Expand Are you just going to be targeting pike? Or walleye too? If both I'd suggest one spinning M/F setup and then a MH/F casting setup that you can use exclusively for pike. I don't own a Revros but I had a buddy who had never got into fishing call me up this year and ask me to assemble a "budget" combo for him. I ended up buying him a Revros and he let me try it when we went out together. Let me tell you, it's a solid reel for the price. You can get one for 70$ full price from Sail. Only issue is the 2500 isn't available online and the 3000 is pretty bulky imo. The 2500 would probably feel better on M spinning rod. Look on amazon or elsewhere for a better price. $80 CAD is still too much for a Revros in my opinion. Or just wait for black friday/boxing day. I try to avoid paying full price when it comes to rod and reels. For a spinning rod in the $100 range, I really like the Fenwick HMG. They're also 110$ at Sail but sadly not available online. Their 7'0 M/F has a lure rating of 1/4-3/4 so that's a pretty diverse range. You can throw jigs for walleye, shallow cranks for walleye too, while also using it for some smaller spoons for pike. You can get one at Cabela's for 130$ but that's over your budget. Try looking for a deal on them this black friday or boxing day and you'll be super happy with it. I'll be happy to help you out with the baitcast setup too once you get there! One thing at a time lol ? Quote
sideways2 Posted November 21, 2020 Author Posted November 21, 2020 Pike, Walleye and Rainbows!! Just a note... I pay 11% sales tax here... so a Revros is $70 + taxes is $77... Fuego would be $154... any spare spools I can find is going to run me $40-$50 I'm just trying to figure out the best way... and maybe you are right Finessegenics ... maybe I should just go to one spinning and one casting?? I like Fenwick as well... have had the Eagle GT, HMX and HMG in the past... $75, $99 and $125 plus taxes locally. Maybe a couple Eagles and then I can pay around with the reel budget LOL!! Quote

Expand None of the LT reels are truly sealed reels like VS and ZeeBass. They have features to minimize entry of water at key locations. Essentially they are splash proof, not water proof. Unless you drop your reels in the water or blast with high pressure water from a hose you arent going to have problems. The LT line of reels uses 2 kinds of material for the frames. The Exceler and Fuego use a carbon composite material for the frame. The higher end reels like the Procyon and above use a proprietary high strand carbon composite material called Zaion which is lighter and stronger then the material used for the Fuego and Exceler. The Fuego LT and Exceler LT are essentially the same reels, same frame, same main gear and so on. The biggest difference is the Fuego has the Mag Seal and the Exceler doesnt. Its good to have but if you dont plan to fish saltwater or fish in the rain you dont need it. The Legalis LT and the Regal LT are good options as well if you want to save a few $. The Fuego is probably the best reel at its price point and I dont think any other reel comes close. For a casting reel I would recommend the SLX, SLX XT, Fuego CT, Tatula CT and if you want to throw lighter baits the SLX MGL. As far as rods go 13 makes some really good rods for the $. The Omen Black @140$ is lighter and feels better then my 200$+ SC Avids. The 13 Fate Black is under 100$ and feels like 150$ + rod. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted November 22, 2020 Posted November 22, 2020 I fished with an Exceler 2500 for 10 years and never had a problem with it, but just because I could, I traded it in on a Sahara 3000 HG two years ago during the BPS Spring classic sale. Quote
sideways2 Posted November 22, 2020 Author Posted November 22, 2020 Thanks for that!! I still have not ruled it out. And newapti5 ... thanks for the suggestion of Amazon Warehouse... I checked this morning and found a Daiwa FGCT100XSL Fuego CT ... left-handed which is perfect... for $100 CAD... it's an 8.1:1 retrieve but I really don't think that'll be an issue??? Quote
Conclusion Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 Wait, confused on your first post. Are you able to get a BG for $135CAD or is that USD? Quote

Expand You're welcome! That Fuego CT is a good baitcaster under $100 USD. In my opinion, the 8.1 ratio maybe lack a little power for large crankbaits, chatterbaits, or other resistant baits, but very good for jigs and jerkbaits. I have one myself, mostly for jerkbaits and topwaters, and it's still going strong after 2 years. Amazon Warehouse is good place for reels and lines, especially the latter. I constantly find 30%~75% off deals of major brand fishing lines there, and some of them are brand new, except maybe the damaged packing/wraping. Quote

Would love to know where you saw that. There is one local shop near me (Ontario) that I bought a bg 3000 from last winter at $139 and when I wanted to grab a 2500 this summer couldn't get it ( as we all know stock is hard to get). Ended up spending the $160 on Amazon. Quote
Lead Head Posted November 23, 2020 Posted November 23, 2020 I highly recommend running braid main line on your spinning reel, then just changing the size of your leader as needed. This eliminates the need for a spare spool and will greatly increase your line manageability, casting distance, and (for me anyway) will improve sensitivity. 1 Quote
sideways2 Posted November 23, 2020 Author Posted November 23, 2020 Well... as posted in the Black Friday thread: 20% Off Daiwa Products (Now) - https://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/holiday-promotions/black-friday-sale-2020.html Was able to order a BG2500 for $79US... after shipping and exchange it's $130CAD... no way I can get that here so I figured I'd bite the bullet ? I figure with that and the Fuego CT coming in this week I should be set for the spring!! Now just need a couple rods LOL!! Thanks again everyone for their input... sure was appreciated and it sure helped!! Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 23, 2020 Super User Posted November 23, 2020 Add Shimano Sahara FI to your list of choices. I am a Daiwa casting reel fan however Shimano spinning reels are excellent. My last Daiwa spinning reel was state of the art 30 years ago, TD SS 1600 and it’s still available today because it’s bullet proof. Tom Quote
sideways2 Posted November 24, 2020 Author Posted November 24, 2020 Hey Tom I went through some Shimano back 20 years ago and granted yes that was a long time ago but there was nothing back then that made me want to go away from Daiwa so I'd imagine today would be the same lol!! I'm really a fan of their spinning reels so if anything I'll grab another!! Baitcasters... I used alot of Abu rounds... wouldn't mind having one of them back again at some point in time. I think two to get back into the swing of things is a good start Quote
