Jcj90 Posted November 16, 2020 Posted November 16, 2020 How often do you retie braid? I have a few rods I rigged up about two months and haven’t fished them since I retied. Should I retie? Does A knot actually weaken from sitting and not being fished? Quote
Finessegenics Posted November 16, 2020 Posted November 16, 2020 You should retie. Does the knot actually weaken? I don’t know for sure but my guess would be yes. Even without exposure to the sun or weather, your line degrades with time so that knot would not be at its 100%. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted November 16, 2020 Super User Posted November 16, 2020 I retie often, and more than likely, not often enough. I would bet that of all the fish I have ever lost from a line failure, 99% would be because of a bad knot or the line near the knot was bad. I still struggle to this day with not taking the time to retie more often. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 16, 2020 Super User Posted November 16, 2020 Rarely do I retie braid. I use it for vertical fishing and ARigs. I have it on at least 7 setups. Quote
basser27 Posted November 16, 2020 Posted November 16, 2020 If you haven’t fished it since you retied how could it weaken? I’ve left the same frog on my frog rod all season and only retied when the line look frayed. 2 Quote
Shimano_1 Posted November 16, 2020 Posted November 16, 2020 Can't argue whether one should or shouldn't in that situation. I personally wouldn't if they've not been fished unless they've been stored in heat/cold etc. I dont fish a lot of braid but I think about my drop shot rod...I run braid to fluoro leader and I never retie until my leader is short enough to need replaced. Id guess that's often over 2 months. Quote

I only keep braid on one rod and only re tie when it visually appears shredded, which unfortunately is often haha 1 Quote
CrankFate Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 When it’s time. I get rid of it when it looks bad or when my line capacity goes down from cutting a tiny bit off every time I use the rod or when I get snagged. Sometimes, especially in saltwater, where you reel through a lot of sand you get tiny cuts that make tiny hairs come out of the sides of the line. I always switch it out when that happens. But it never happens on my bass setups. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 18, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 18, 2020 When I first got serious about tournament fishing, I got in the habit of re tying every night beforehand regardless of the type of line. Also a few times during the day depending on how many were caught on a specific combo, after a particular hard time getting free after being hung up etc. I’m sure sometimes it’s not really necessary, but it’s become a habit that gives me one less thing to worry about. I rarely need to retie braid if directly to the lure. HOWEVER, I retie my braid to fluro leader every couple weeks (probably 7-8 trips) as I find the friction can eventually lead to a knot slip (typically on a cast) from abrasion with the guides. I have gotten efficient in typing smaller modified alberto knots for the connection knot but I rather retie the leader than lose a $5-15 bait. Quote
