Preference on number of jig strands

Hey ya’ll,

 

Hope everyone’s enjoying the holiday sales and keeping the bait monkey happy as must be done. Been thinking about ideal numbers of jig strands. What is y’all’s preference for big fish? What about for numbers? Does this change with the seasons? Conventional wisdom seems to say that more strands = bigger profile = bigger appeal to big bass. “In Pursuit of Big Bass” by Bill Murphy that I read disagrees. I believe more strands could help hide a hook but could perhaps make the jig look more unnatural? Or does more strands create a more believable profile? Lots of questions that I’ll try to figure out on the water too. Interested to hear y’alls thoughts.

I make my jigs by how I want them to fall.  I use anywhere from 40 to 80 strands.

I make my own skirts. I fish a lot of clear water, and pressured fish. 44 strands (2 full tabs) of my main color(s) is what I like, and then just a 2-3 strands of my accent color.

 

For example my "bluegill" swim jig gets a tab of dark green pumpkin for the back, a tab of green pumpkin candy, and then 2 strands of pumpkin with orange fire tip, and 2 strands of watermelon with chart. fire tip.

I make/pour my own jigs. 1/4 oz 2 tabs, 3/8 and sometimes 1/2 2.5 tabs ( sometimes I go 3 tabs if I’m feeling froggy).  Anything bigger than 1/2 oz I use a 3.0 tabs.

Two to three tabs per bait is what I use. Most get 2.5 tabs, 2 tabs main color and 1/2 a tab for accent.  If I want a really bulky profile for say 1oz football jigs I use Starflash skirts.
