I'm a bank fisherman and I'm looking to make some DIY rod holders to stick into the bank when I feel like throwing shiners.  I'm looking at angle cutting some PVC pipe.  Just not sure what size to get.   Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance.

I used 3" PVC to make rod holders for the beach when I was doing a lot of surf fishing.   I was using  9 and 10 foot surf rods, so the they were about 3 feet long.

1-1/4" ID PVC will hold many split grip bass fishing rods pretty tightly.  1-1/2" ID would probably do most of the rest unless your rod has abnormally large grips.

I use 1-1/4" ID PVC for rod holders in my kayak.  I cut out two notches at the top, one a bit lower than the other, so the trigger and part of the reel will sink below the top of the PVC pipe, giving it a bit more stability.  They're probably about 1-1/2' long.  It seems to work for trolling and just general rod holding.  They don't rattle around much in there which helps to prevent them from getting dislodged by accident.  However, without much clearance, you have to pay attention when placing the rods into the holders.

If you want to get fancy and flare the end out, heat it over a stove burner then push it down over a wine bottle. That's how I did mine for my kayak. I used a router for the slot.

One tip: Paint it a bright color! I've never had to pay for a rod holder because I find the ones people leave behind, which I have also done myself.
