Hey y’all,

Happy to finally be a part of the community! I recently moved back to Austin, Texas from Las Vegas, NV back in March.

I started bass fishing in March with everything being shut down. Now, it’s practically all I do! I play poker for a living and now that I’m playing online full-time, I have tons of opportunities to fish. I’m currently fishing everyday for 3-4 hours and I’m loving it!

I have a canoe on Lake Austin that predates my fishing hobby. I’m looking to upgrade to a kayak soon. As with most hobbies I have, I jump in with both feet. I’m currently looking at getting the new Old Town sportsman autopilot 120. God bless my wallet.

So far, I’ve found Lew’s to by my equipment of choice. So far, I’ve accumulated a BB1 Pro, Mach Crush, Classic Pro, and Jason Christie speed spool. I had a couple Abu pro-max reels but didn’t like them and sold em.
As for rods, I’m using Lews IM7 speed sticks now. I tried the Berkley Lightning Shock and promptly returned it. Also, tried the Abu Vengence for my frogging rod and realized frogging isn’t my jam.

Planning on upgrading a few rods this month. So far, on the fence between Dobyns Fury rods, or the new TP1X series rods.

Anyway, happy to be a part of the community and I know I’ll learn a lot from y’all!

Take care,

Jon

Welcome aboard Jon,

We have a pretty strong kayak bass fishing scene in the Austin area.  Hope to see you at some of the events! Several facebook groups that have good information on them for area events. Not sure if KATS is going to come back this coming year or not. KATS is sponsored by ACK (Austin canoe and kayak). It has been serious fishing competition for around 14 years or so.

With the Flying Dutchman handle I gotta ask. Do you sail also?

Thanks for the welcome!

I have only sailed a handful of times back at summer camps when I was much younger. Getting knocked upside the head with the swinging boom a couple of times turned me off the whole experience, lol.

The reason I picked the handle is because I just took delivery of a 2020 Searay 190 SPX that will be named “The Flying Dutchman”. It was between that and “Black Pearl”

You catch one of the Guadalupe bass yet?  ( I hope I got the name right)

Yes, you did get the name of our state fish right! I have caught many Guadalupe bass. A couple of them may have even been close to the state record.

Since your going to be in the Austin area. The LOCO (lower Colorado river) is a excellent place to catch large Guadalupe bass, The state record was caught in 2014 from there. I've attached a link to the article.
