Super User slonezp Posted November 9, 2020 Super User Posted November 9, 2020 First I've heard of it. They use the Verizon network. Unlimited everything for 1/2 what I'm paying now. Any reviews? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted November 9, 2020 Super User Posted November 9, 2020 I dunno - I've tried other services over the last 25 years (yes, I've had a cell that long...same number even) - and I keep going back to ATT...even paying the early termination penalty to get away from the others a couple times. CountryboyinDC Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 I don't know that one, but I have several family members that use Straight Talk (sold by Wal-Mart, usually), and it is a similar service. It is a bit more of a hassle to set up, and the support is less (if that's possible) than the carriers. But generally they're happy, and it accomplishes what they need at a lesser price. I don't think any of them are high data users, so I'd check to see how much it throttles your data (sends you to 2G after you use a certain amount), and see if it seems reasonable to you. Saving money is good, as long as you're happy with what you get. Quote

I currently have ATT and have no idea if they throttle data as well. Quote

Unlimited plan - you might see a slowdown during peak usage times...but they don't throttle based on your usage far as I know. I keep going back to ATT because I get reception in places that Sprint, Verizon and others had dead-spots. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 I've never heard of Yahoo's phone plan, but I just recently switched to MINT mobile. Which appears similar to the Yahoo plan except Mint goes off of T-Mobile service. I am coming from a T mobile prepaid plan that was $30 a month for unlimited text, x number of talk minutes ( can't remember), and """unlimited""" ( 5 gigs of high-speed, unlimited after, and sometimes the slowed down data wasn't good enough to do much of anything). Mint, which is also prepaid has unlimited talk and text and 12 gigs of data for $25. They have the same plan for $20 except 8 gigs high-speed data which was tempting as well. So now I'm saving $5 a month and have more talk and over twice as much data. I've been with Mint for 2 months now and I would say the service quality has been the same as before. I think the price difference was worth making the carrier switch - and for anyone looking to save money on the phone bill, I would recommend Mint, ( or switching to prepaid as these are usually cheaper). I personally don't see a reason to have to shy away from the smaller carriers unless you travel often or just absolutely need top service coverage. IMO these smaller subcontractor carriers offer 95% the same service for %50 the price (sometimes even less!). If the Yahoo plan appeals for you I say go for it. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 The throttling issue is one that really gets to people on 'unlimited' plans among some of my friends. Even there after you use a certain amount, they throttle. Usually it's a high amount, say 10 or 20 GB, and the people using this amount of data are younger streaming Spotify playlists, watching a ton of TikTok videos, etc. when they're not on Wi-Fi. It definitely doesn't happen to me often, but if we're on vacation or something, I can use up whatever my monthly allocation is. I can monitor the usage on my phone, and if you're on AT&T, I'm sure there's a preinstalled app you can use to do the same thing. That may tell you what group you're in - the ones that come nowhere near their limit, or a habitual overage one, or somewhere in between. If it turns out that isn't an issue for you, then something like the Yahoo service could be for you. There are quite a few of them out there, and the only one anyone I talk to has is the one through Wal-Mart that I mentioned. You might check that one against the Yahoo one you're looking at to see if the price is the roughly the same. This forum is probably not big enough to get enough to get a lot (if any) responses. It may be better to go on a bargain forum like Slickdeals and see if the service has a decent reputation. I wish I knew more to tell you. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted November 11, 2020 Super User Posted November 11, 2020 I switched from Verizon to xfinity 2 months ago. Cut my bill in half for the same plan, and service is the same as they use the same towers. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted November 11, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 11, 2020 I say get it. With the money you save you can put it towards the Bassresource Christmas exchange, am I right @deaknh03? ? 1 Quote
