Super User roadwarrior Posted November 10, 2020 Super User Posted November 10, 2020 Like most guys I have a broad selection of topwater lures. However, I only fish three for the most part: PopMax, Sammy and MegaStrike Cavitron (black on black). Quote

As i waded down the lake i was getting hit several times but the fish didnt get hooked, i was using the 120 el choppo, berkleys version of wp. I did eventually catch more pike and some bass but also lots more of hit and miss. Weeds and more weeds is where i throw it, run it right over the top fast, slow, pause, jerk it and also on the edge of lily pads and bull rushes. When I fish a plopper style bait around reeds I had a lot of misses to. Best I can guess is that the reeds are making it difficult for the fish to line up on the bait and the strike zone is small. Most were caught in wider open patches. as I write the above maybe a popper or chugger would have been the right bait to extend the strike zone in a crowded environment like reeds. 1 Quote
BZNY Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Because there are few things as exciting as watching a Pickerel t-bone your lure, or watching a big mouth suck it down. Like most people, I have a feeling I have caught far more fish on soft plastic worms than any other lure, but we all love the idea of top-water lures working, because we can see the bait and the anticipation therefore is so much greater. So keep buying topwater, it's good for your soul 2 Quote

Its like when i was younger in my dating days before marriage, going out with the same girl was boring, i needed to date different woman with different attitudes which would broden my life and open me up to new things and keep life exciting. Big Hands Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I especially like the Whopper Plopper 90 . It doesn't have a rattle in it, and the prop is relatively small so the disturbance it creates is also relatively small. Seems to be what they prefer when I fish them. The body shapes also vary, some being more streamlined and others with a plumper profile. As for why you are addicted to topwater, that's because it's very exciting to see the strike as well as feel it. If the fish are eating topwater baits, then I would rather fish that way if possible. 1 Quote
jimanchower Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and fished it for the first time yesterday, just piddling around. I wasn't impressed - the body kept wanting to roll over on me. Maybe it was user error - I'm a novice, relatively speaking - but I have not had that issue on the 75, 90, or 110. I run a split ring and swivel on all of them. 1 Quote
mikey z Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I'm kind of obsessed with my walking bait right now, I usually spend at least half of my trip using it. I have mass amounts of confidence in it and I think it looks so great in action to me, but apparently the fish couldn't care less lol Quote
Cdn Angler Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 I am Northern and fish clear water mostly. Or around shallow vegetation. I probably caught 30% of bass last year on them SMB and LMB. I can pretty much try every time out with a good chance of some success. I think water clarity is biggest variable. They can see it. Quote
billmac Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 I have the same problem with Rapala Minnows. I hardly ever use them, but I just love the look of them. I should probably start fishing with them. 1 Quote

I already have too many but recently purchased a bunch Duo Realis pencils in the 85 and 65 size. Those things are so easy to walk even at it’s small size. Quote
Elkins45 Posted November 14, 2020 Posted November 14, 2020 A Choppo is the first topwater lube I've bought in years. That's not because I don't like them, it's because I don't lose very many. The only way I ever lose a topwater is if it ends up in a tree. I'm still partial to a black Jitterbug as a solid body lure but most of my topwater fishing is with an unweighted floating worm on a light hook. If I'm lucky I might catch two fish on the same one, but usually they get pretty torn up by the first fish. The good floating worms are getting harder and harder to find and my hoarded supply is starting to dwindle. 1 Quote

Same with inline spins, probably should fish them more to. Quote
