Super User ChrisD46 Posted November 7, 2020 Super User Posted November 7, 2020 Besides a day of flipping where you want to retrieve your jig / soft plastic back fast for the next cast - what else are you using a fast 8:1:1 gear ratio reel for ? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted November 7, 2020 Super User Posted November 7, 2020 Frogs, buzzbaits over thick weeds, pitching, bubba-shot into the lily-pads. If I'm purposefully tossing into moderate to thick weeds, I'm using my 8.1:1. 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Everything but deep cranks for me. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Only jigs and Texas rigs for me. Even use a 7 ratio for this sometimes. Depends on the reels tho. My lews are faster ipt than say a shimano slx. I like about 31 ipt for most techniques. Jerkbaits, topwater, buzzbaits, burning shallow cranks, etc. I've got 2 of the 8's and they're both on flippin sticks 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 7, 2020 Super User Posted November 7, 2020 Everything except spinner baits. For those I use my 7s. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Since a great percentage of my fishing is plastics on the tidal Potomac I have gravitated to faster reels across the board pretty much. Exceptions are a Curado 200E7, 7.0:1 for spinnerbaits and blade baits; a Chronarch 150, 6.2:1 for crankbaits; and a 200I HG 7.2:1 for frogs. Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Any and all baits I work with my rod + buzzbaits. Everything else I use a 7.x:1 or slower. Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted November 7, 2020 Super User Posted November 7, 2020 Flipping, Frogging, and some top water baits, i.e. buzz baits.. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 8, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 8, 2020 Frogs, buzzbaits, and topwaters. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted November 8, 2020 Author Super User Posted November 8, 2020 Thanks for replies - some I expected while others are new . *It's getting to be the 7:1:1 is "today's 6:3:1" and relegating the 5:4:1 for deep cranking only . *Yes , IPT is king in comparing gear ratios - but in general we can agree on faster gear ratios being more popular today. NJ_Snappy_Bois Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Jigs (except swimjigs I like 7:1 ish), Texas, punchin, froggin Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 8, 2020 Super User Posted November 8, 2020 I would say buzz baits and frogs but the ones I have tried just didn't suit my style of fishing. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Punching flipping and pitching. Is all I use 8:1 for Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted November 9, 2020 Author Super User Posted November 9, 2020 *For those that favor a 8:1:1 gear ratio baistcast reel - do you own more than one ? If so , how do you have them rigged (i.e. line & rod ?) Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted November 9, 2020 Super User Posted November 9, 2020 Just one rig. 7'0" Heavy/Fast rod. 50# braid with 12# YZH leader. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted November 9, 2020 Super User Posted November 9, 2020 Pretty much anything can be fished with it. Though the one place where a high gear ratio like that excels, in my opinion, is buzzbaits. I think gear ratios are more of a personal preference thing than a technique specific one. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 Like most here, I like them for bottom contact baits targeting high percentage areas. Unlike most here, I prefer a slower gear ratio when reducing the size and weight of my bottom contact baits. Offerings with a half ounce of lead or tungsten get high speed reels, but I often drag a smaller Texas rig with less IPT to aid with bottom contact when I'm slow reeling and fast shaking -- which I do a lot of. Super User Teal Posted November 9, 2020 Super User Posted November 9, 2020 I have a couple. Most of mine at 7 to 1 orn6 to 1. I reel wanna try that 10:1 zillion. It would basically be flipping, frigging, and buzzbaits Quote
onenutinthewater Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 Float & spoon fishing for salmon/steelhead The faster the retrieval rate the better as the presentation is made in freespool Quote
