Finessegenics Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Hey guys. I know what you’re thinking; not another thread about “rod recommendations”. I’m just really interested in getting a heavy duty setup and I’m rather inexperienced with the gear that goes with this style of fishing. I rarely every fish ‘slop’. When I do, I use a MH/F which is just fine. But I have the cash and I’ve wanted to add a setup like this to my arsenal for a long time. I plan to buy a mojo bass or bass x 7’4 H/F for frogging, punching into moderate/sparse weeds and pitching heavier t-rigs (3/8-1/2oz) around weeds. I have the opportunity to buy either model lightly used. I’m a St-Croix fanboy (currently own 4 of their rods, 3 mojo bass & 1 avid x) so naturally I gravitated towards this stick when I saw a couple of em being sold on Facebook. So for owners of SC’s 7’4 H/F (specifically mojo or bass x but all input is appreciated) how do you use these rods? Is it a broomstick? A true Fast action or some bend further down the blank? I’d really appreciate your overall thoughts and experiences with the rod. Thanks! Quote
RichF Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I have the 7'4 HF Avid-X. I actually don't use it all that often but I've tried several things on it. It's not a broomstick and I would say it's a true fast action. It works well with frogs but I use mine mostly for 5-6 in hollow belly swimbaits and heavy swing heads. I've pitched a jig with it a little but didn't like it for that. It has a fairly short handle so the balance isn't great. I've owned several Croixs and have never found one I REALLY like for flipping and pitching. This one will do what you want it to do though. 1 Quote
r83srock Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I have the 7’4” H mojo and like it a lot. It’s not the lightest rod I own but it just feels solid to me. Lots of power, but more flexible than heavy powered St. Croixs from previous generations. It casts most frogs really well, like a spro 65 or pad crasher. I use it for punching, big jigs, jigs down to 3/8 oz if need be and big Spinnerbaits too, it handles all of these tasks just fine. It’s a bit parabolic when it loads up and I like that, it’s plenty sensitive too! I have fished the Avid X version and about the only difference I can feel is it’s a bit more balanced. 1 Quote
Nelson Delaney Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I use the avid-x 7’4”H primarily for froggin. It also sees some use for heavy top water & some swim/jerk baits when pike fishing. 1 Quote
