Ohioguy25 Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 I am using live shiners, and I’ve been catching pretty successfully lately in this small river/creek I fish. My spot is a 3-5 ft hole at the end of a decent little bottle neck/current. I wanna fish tomorrow or Saturday but can’t decide which would be best and being injured my spot is a pain to get to on crutches so I have to choose my trips wisely. Overnight low tonight is 37, tomorrow is high is 45 and mostly cloudy. Overnight low tomorrow is 29, high Saturday is 53 and sunny. I’d prefer to go saturday as it will be sunny and warmer, I’m just worried that the overnight low of 29 will shock the fish. Is 8 degrees difference in overnight lows enough that it’ll matter? If the water you are fishing is the deepest best looking water for a long distance up and downstream then fish will likely be in it all winter. So it may slow the bite some but if the hole is good and your using live bait I'd still think you could have success. 1 Quote

Tonight the temps going bottom out at a record breaking 18 degrees overnight. Then a rebound by the end of the weekend. I won't be going out tomorrow morning but Sunday looks promising. As you can see above the fish are feeding in my river. 36 degree air temps that morning at sunrise. I saw the Smallies chasing baitfish all the way to shore. I was quite the sight. They were jumping to get away from the Bass. I tied on a Storm 360GT 1/8oz swimbait in Houdini. I can only imaging I would have done way better with a live shiner. Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted October 30, 2020 Super User Posted October 30, 2020 Temps here will be 33 tonight, and tomorrow will hit 44 max, but I'm still going. Funny thing is I'm hitting the same lake as last year where the temps did nearly the same thing the night before. I ended up with two 2lb bass that I was sure were bluegill because of their fight. They were that lethargic. My brother got skunked, but he has a surprise weekend off, so if we can fish together we will regardless of the impending doom. The bright note is that a 8mph southern wind will be pushing against a bank with submerged bushes near deeper water. Long underwear, gloves, and chins up. We'll see. Quote

Super User Spankey Posted October 31, 2020 Super User Posted October 31, 2020 You should by a decent pool thermometer and start checking your temps. Cast in into a hole you are not fishing or drop it over the side of the boat. There is a difference between air, surface and depth temps. Quote
