Most may laugh but today was my first using a Ned rig set up. Just never got to trying the set up.. what r u all throwing these on as I was having issues detecting bite even though I landed 11 . Could feel no knock nothing really .. palming reel with finger under line as my usual.. they were all dinks so guessing that’s why I felt nothing. Setting the hook is key ... not oh the line is going off a little as I’m reeling in and lucky they were not all swallowed which 1 was unfortunately and could not get out .. I mean he swallowed it.

I do all my finesse work with light spinning gear. My current main finesse rig is a Pflueger President-25 on a Dobyns Fury 702 (ML/F) with 8# mono...going to 6# mono next year.

With the Ned technique you will not always get the expected tap, so you should watch your line, or feel for resistance on the line (this is what I do). When you go to set the hook, do not “jerk” as you would with other soft baits. Instead use a sweeping motion.  After a while you will be able to tell whether the resistance is from weeds, a snag, or hopefully a fish. Reacting quickly to the resistance will dramatically cut down on gut hooked fish and improve your hook up ratio.

I agree with MN Fisher on the selection of equipment. I too use a smaller reel and a ML rod. Just make sure you set your drag correctly and you will have a blast catching all species and all sizes.

The ned is like that most times.  Frequently fish eat it on the initial fall.  Just feels mushy, different.  And like RichieG says, use your reel and a sweep to set the hook.  Whatever line you use, you MUST be able to SEE IT as your bait swims off in a fish's mouth.  Good luck man!

Ya - I'm running Sufix Elite, Hi-Vis Yellow on my finesse rig.

All I have is baitcasters.. lightest I have is a 6’6 White Bird medium heavy/fast... but it’s a complete pool noodle .. it’s nice whip lol. Currently have 15lb braid on it .. add 8lb flouro leader?

I'd go Hi-Vis braid and maybe a 6# leader on it.

If you insist on BC only - go find a good, light casting reel and a ML or at most a M rod.

I'm a half-n-halfer - 5 BC rigs, 5 spinning

It's a no feel technique, and a lot of bites are very subtle. A light spinning rod with braid would do you a lot of good if you're going to try to do it more. A whippy casting rod does not equal a good finesse rod.

I landed multiple 4lb fish (and who knows how many smaller) on a $15 Academy brand spinning rod and a 20 year old spinning reel i dug out of a closet. If you don't want to spend big for a spinning ned setup, a $30 combo will work just fine. Most commonly, the lighter the ned rig the better the results. Fewer hangups too.

I used the cheap gear for about 2 months before I broke down and got nicer stuff. Neds were just too productive for me not to Invest in something decent. I can feel a bit more, but I really don't think I have caught a single fish with the "good" gear that I wouldn't have with the cheap stuff.

I’ll probably invest in a decent set up Black Friday .

It doesn't take much. You can get a pretty decent Ned rig setup for under $100. The man himself uses some of the cheapest gear you can find to use his namesake rig.

I doubt I’ll go crazy on one . Will just have to figure out what to get and guess use it for wacky rigs as well .. although have always fished them with a bait caster with no issues

Ned, Drop-shot, split-shot and light finesse jigs (up to 1/4oz), I do with the Pres-25/Fury 702 rig. A good, light spinning rig is very versatile for finesse presentations. While I do wacky with a Medium rig - Trion-30/Aird-X M/F - you could probably get by with the ML rig for that too.

I use the same rods for alot of finesse stuff.  It's not a technique that i do sooo much that it has gotten it's own rig.  Powell 712 and an OG tstula. 7 ML.

Both have 8lb big game.  I may try some 8lb braid on the ML and see if it's better for needs and light shakey heads.

I believe the 30 is perfect. It can hold 130yds of .010’ line (most 8lb monos are around that diameter).  The Pflueger size 30 is actually similar to the 2500 Shimanos and Daiwa’s which is a little misleading even though there is no industry standard.

That will match well with a 6’9 rod? Feel like a newbie lol.. I have zero clue with spinning gear

Across the board, all Pflueger spinning reels are about the same size

20 = @500

25 = @1100

30 = @2400

35 = @3000

40 = @4000

I'll be using lighter line (6#) for my finesse, so the 25 was the right size for me. Use to have 4# YZH (about 6# mono diameter) on it and it was just fine.

A 30 on a 6'9" will be fine - my medium rig currently is a Trion-30 on a 6'6" medium/fast.

Ok.. I have zero idea how this just happened or if it would work.. 5 minutes ago my wife walks in my office and says what’s this? She hands me a Abu Garcia Cardinal Stx 10. I said where the **** did you find this ? It was a bin in the back room of basement she was going thru.. I have no idea where it came from.. it looks like it’s been used quite a bit .. it’s not mine but guess somehow it is now as it ended up in a bin in my basement .  Obviously about to google this but anyone have a clue about it?

Cardinal reels are rugged...I have a Cardinal 562 that's about 40 years old and still performs well.

10 size is 1000 - so it's smaller than a Pflueger 25, but not much.

So this would work for now?That would great and hilarious. It’s hard to read the reel think it’s says 5.3.1 ratio.. I have to tear into it later tonight, unfortunately late meeting around 6:30 or 7 that will drive me nuts for 2 hours

I found a British site that had the stats

5.2:1  52cm retrieve (about 20" per handle turn)

Holds 140m of .20mm line (about 150yds of 4# mono) so about 110-115 yds of 6#

With the money you saved on a reel - you can get a better rod

I've been using the Dobyns Fury 702SF and it's a really nice rod for the money. Wait for TW's Black Friday sale and you can get it for under $100 - that's how I got mine last year.
