Do people over complicate the ned rig?

The serious answer, yes I think it's way overblown for an idea to reuse broken senkos.  Bottom line, many have put together a plan that works for them, and this is made from time fishing the bait.  What you come up with probably has more to do with where, when, and how you fish.  It's a really easy finesse method to get into, and for that I think it's cool.  It's way less complicated than other popular methods, like drop shot.  The baits are fairly economical, too.

And that they are.  When I first started fishing the Ned I went out and bought 8-10 packs of heads, 10 bags of Zinkerz of various colors and a couple bags of Strike King Zeros.  That was about 6 years ago and I still have 8 unopened packs of heads, and I think I've only opened about 3 bags of worms.  With a drop of superglue on the head to hold the worm on I've caught upwards of 100 fish or so on one Ned rig without having to change out the rig.

I use the CrawZ on drop-shots.

I found that the weedless hook didn't go through the Elaztech very well and I missed some fish.  I figured my jigs are cheap and if a lose a couple extra it was fine.  I will drop down to a #4 hook if there are heavy snags.  A #4 hook catches fewer snags.

The other thing you could do is throw the true Ned rig definition out of your mind and just fish it with the hook or weight needed for the situation. Sometimes it’s a true Ned rig other times maybe it’s a short jig worm. 
 

For a weed less presentations I fish it on a slider spider head with the 2/0 light wire hook. This has done well for me. That is a mix of two classic finesse presentations.

One of my friends is a Zman fan boy. He buys the heads and the baits. I use a 1/16 oz ball head and the end of a homemade stick bait and don't see a difference in out catch rate. It's all in his head that he needs to buy the "good" stuff

I was looking at the Flatlands and Lifted Jigs ewg heads and am shy of the 1/0 hook being too big. If any of them i would go with the owner blockhead. I picked up a pack of the eagle claw ned heads and I think I'm going to like them ober the zman heads. I dont care if its zman or not, as long as it works.

The flatlands is 1/0 Gami, its great for hula sticks and longer baits.  It works with the RoboWorm neds but they are 3" but are just a little to big for the TRD IMO. 

The Lifted heads use a VMC which I wasn't crazy about because I don't like VMC very much.  The VMC is smaller then the Gami and works better on the TRD then the Flatlands.  I was hesitant to buy weedless ned heads at first.  I didn't think they would stand very well.  I was worried about the wire being to thick to penetrate well with a ML rod. 

After using them for a few days I was surprised that the stood up just as well as the open hook heads and the hookup/land % was higher.  So far the Lifted head is the best 1 IMO.  I haven't tried the EWG Blockheads, but I imagine as long as the hook isn't to big it would be as good or better then the Lifted head.

The Owner Finesse EWG ball head is a good option if you want more action and they come in a #1.  I had to tie a keeper where the bend of the hook goes into the offset or "shoulder" because the bait wants to slide down.

My friends and I go through a lot of ned rigs, especially in late fall and spring.  Ive only worn out a handful of Zmans ned baits, but I've lost a ton of them.  Some lakes ill lose 4 or 5 in a couple hours because the fish are holding in lilly roots or wood.

That's really the only time I have to re-rig a Ned is when I lose it when I break off.
