Soup spilled on reel

So i went to a party and someone literally spilled soup on my fishing reel and rod that was tucked away in the corner and the soup became gelatinous on the reel and rod, for the rod i just rinsed it down and dried it off and for the reel i rinsed it and opened the brakes and rinsed it down too, but somehow there’s some stuck in the handle, but i’m not sure if i rinsed it all out, anything else i should do, to be safe?

Dude I'm dedicated to my rods and reels but taking them to a party?

 

Hope it wasn't cream of mushroom, once dry that stuff could hold the space shuttle together.

 

I'd break it down, scrub and oil/grease and re-assemble.

Full tear-down, clean and re-assemble is the only way I'd be confident after something like that

I brought my fishing gear to a party in Jersey. Tony Soprano tripped and spilled a plate of Lasagna on my fishing reel. I just let the dog lick it off, then I went fishing. No problemo. Bada Bing?

lmaoooo, i think it’s fine, my reel and rod was just super filmy from the fat in the soup

it was a adult party for someone’s birthday and i’m only 16 so i decided to just go fishing while they party thats y i brought a rod

I would have done the same thing at your age if there was a place nearby to fish.  Heck.  I am a lot older than 16 but would do that today if I thought I could get away with it.

Exactly....just when you thought you had heard every question possible on here now somebody's asking how to clean gelatinous soup out of a reel.

 

To the OP in all seriousness I think I'd do a teardown, clean and lube job like mentioned above. There are lots of good videos on YouTube showing how to do it.

Thanks, i’ll have to go buy some grease, but in the mean time, i cleaned everything i could and re oiled what needed oil, have to do homework now, wonder if it’s more difficult to find time to fish being a teen or an adult ?

Ha, it’s one of my favorite fishing spots too, caught a few decent ones on a senko, made me feel better for the soup being spilled on it

Honestly when I was your age I spent more time drinking and chasing after girls than fishing. I'm not condoning that behavior just stating a fact. Looking back I wish I woulda fished more..so it sounds like your doing it right. As far as finding time I'd say it can go either way...it can be tough as an adult when work gets hectic if your working 60+ hours a week. But on the other hand as an adult I don't have to ask permission to go or ask for a ride so that helps.

Did you use some type of solvent to remove the traces of soup. Acetone or at least alcohol (no not the drinking kind)

Girl chasing at that age? Yes

Drinking at that age? Occasional glass of wine with dinner or a beer after yard-work...which my dad handed to me, so it was supervised.

well i’m 16 and i’ve been dating the same girl since 13 so no chasing for me?, but yeah it sucks asking for a ride to go fish a new spot, hopefully i’ll have time to find a job and get a car to travel

No there was none at the time, but do you think i’m fine, i rinsed the reel and wiped it down with a napkin and then used a warm wetted napkin to wipe it down and it feels how it did before, not all sticky and slimy

The outside isn't the important part - realize that the soup could seep through the line, go through the spool vent-holes and get inside. A touch of that on bearings and gears and you could be in trouble. It really does need at least a partial tear-down, solvent rinse and new lube/oil (lube the gears, oil the bearings).

Well, I changed addresses (Massachusetts to Minnesota) when I was 14 - few months shy of 15...so I had to find a new girlfriend. First one didn't work as a girlfriend...we figured that out halfway through the school year...but we remained friends. Second one lasted from near the end of 9th grade until graduation.

Hopefully it didn’t seep inside, but i’ll have to watch some videos then do a cleaning and greasing hopefully i don’t mess up, but i rather do it myself, i hate when i can’t do something myself i feel like someone else will forgot a part lol but that’s just me

Watch some vids on disassembling/reassembling reels - and make sure you have a parts breakout of your reel - like this one I have for my Supreme (lo-res copy of the hi-res PDF I have on my computer).

If you do it yourself, take lots of pictures along the way.  And lay everything out in a way that you'll not only know the order that everything goes back together, but the orientation.  It's easy to mess a reel up by putting a washer in upside down.  You can usually find a schematic online that'll help too, especially if you run into trouble.  

 

I've rebuilt clocks, cameras, and carburators with this system.  You don't have to be experienced or even mechanically inclined if you're organized and methodical enough.

True that, when i take it apart i’m gonna line it up backwards, and right orientation so i can just work backwards putting parts in, but i have two sisters 3 and under and they always wants to help so that’s my biggest fear, my sister “helping me” put it back together ☠️

Yep - if you got the reel new - even 'bubble packed', they include the diagram. So you're good.
