p111 Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 So I just received a brand-spankin' new Aldebaran. I take it out of the box to feel how smooth it is and this is what I hear: https://youtu.be/I8ODwekCmtU I can't believe this is normal! Free spool is quiet. Adjusting the spool tension doesn't help.... I can't believe this is normal for a $300+ reel! Does anyone have any ideas to remedy? I don't want to open it and void the warranty. Can anyone confirm if this is abnormal? Thanks! Quote
CFDoc Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Sounds like any other Shimano.... I kid. I kid. That is NOT normal and there’s definitely an issue with how that reel is operating. You could try contacting Shimano USA and talk to them to see about a fix. Or you could send it to Dan Isaac at reel-ex but that would more than likely be on your dime. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 Nope shimano won’t do nothing with JDM reels. Quote

Super User FishTank Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 It sounds like the reel is bone dry. It may just need to be oiled and a little grease added to the main gear and pinion. For me.....I have come to distrust how reels are produced and stored, even Shimano and Daiwa, etc. I would think that you could just fish reels right out of the box but I now re-lube each new reel I buy. Some reels I have bought have had too much oil and grease and others not enough. I like to make sure it is just the way I like it before I fish it. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 sounds like one of the yoke springs might not have been seated and it's sitting in the real hitting the gears. sounds are hard to diagnose. Could be a number of things. Just pop the side plate off. very easy to do. 1 Quote

That was my initial thought, but disappointing for a new reel. I was concerned opening the reel may violate warranty - especially since I haven't even put any line on it yet. 1 hour ago, CFDoc said: Good point. p111, where did you order from if you don't mind me asking? I have emailed them, but have not received a response yet. I really wanted to use it this weekend. Quote

If it's a JDM reel, I hate to say it.... there is no warranty but sometimes Shimano USA can be sympathetic and get you some kind of help. Back to the sound..... I had a similar noise, but not as bad as yours, in a new Daiwa Steez SV TWS. It just needed a few drops of oil and some grease and it was like a whole different reel. It went from smooth to super smooth and has been so ever since. Quote
Nathan.bass.canada Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Very hard to diagnose by sound. It could be numerous things. If you shake the reel, do you hear anything loose? It could be a piece that was broken and is rattling the gears? Does it feel smooth or when it clicks, do you feel restriction? I work on my reels and own practicaly all shimano's. Never seen an issue like that. Nate Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Does not sound like anything associated with gear teeth. It's a rubbing sound. Something out of place. Karl Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 Have you tried to take the spool out and re-seated? While you at it, just a drop of bantam oil on both spool. When spool tension loose, spool should have some play, check if you have any spool play when loosen tension. Quote

Super User ATA Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 same thing happened to me , I got brand new last week, after oil, become much better , ill try to record and upload in YouTube. exactly like you t he free spool buttery smooth but retrieving was horrible and it is just happening in Aldebaran 30s. watch the review of it on the reel test channel on YouTube, he feel the same after unboxing it infant of camera. The noise occurs when the handle is cranked and not during free spool. I would guess the main gear and pinion are making the noise and would need to be greased lightly along with the anti-reverse bearing and the sleeve that fits over the drive shaft. Again this is just a guess but a lot of issues like this can be resolved by just doing a clean and lube. I would also use a drop of oil or two on the worm gear. Not sure on this one but I think it is plastic so you may not see a whole lot of benefit. Quote
p111 Posted November 4, 2020 Author Posted November 4, 2020 Update: The vendor wasn't much help beyond sending it back on my dime. So, I opened it up, and lo and behold, it was dry! I greased the innards, and she's smooth and quiet now! Thanks to everyone! 2 Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Wow - I called that wrong! Really never thought any reel could come off the line w/o a TON of grease! And - what it would sound like if it did... Very happy to hear of your success! Karl Quote
