Brett's_daddy Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Anybody have experience with this bait? I've been thinking about getting a large open water glide bait but don't want to pay $60+ or have it weigh much more than 4oz. as that's pushing the limits of my swimbait setup. I can get this on Amazon.com for $25 and that seems like a bargain for a bait that size. Quote

Hewhospeaksmuchbull Posted October 23, 2020 Posted October 23, 2020 Sorry I only have the smaller version 7 1/4, but it does swim and glide as its supposed to. Wouldn't think that up sizing would affect the performance of the bait. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 25, 2020 Global Moderator Posted October 25, 2020 I have 2 of them. They're a solid bait for the money. They glide very easy and very wide. They're 4.5oz though, so if 4oz is your top end they're probably going to be too much for the rod you're slinging them on. Quote

The rod I have is a Dobyns Fury 795SB which is rated 1 - 5oz. but I don't think I'd want to cast a bait much over 4oz. with it. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted October 26, 2020 Super User Posted October 26, 2020 That would be pushing it with that rod (I have the same one in the Champion line), but if you have your heart set on that bait you should be able to get away with lob casts. If you don't have your heart set on that bait and just want an open water glide the S-waver 200 is 8" and comes in at 3.5 oz and well under $60. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 26, 2020 Global Moderator Posted October 26, 2020 I have the same Fury, I wouldn't throw the Mag Shine Glide with it. I use a Guide Select to fish mine. Quote

Yeah, that sort of takes the point out of open water glide bait though...you're supposed to chuck those as far as you can so you have a long retrieve over "open water". I think I'll stick with 8" and below baits for the rod I have now. I like the S-waver 200 but $46 is too rich for my blood. I just about cried when I bought a $30 bait (I know my wallet did...lol), can't imagine spending $16 more and if I lost a $46 bait to a snag or line break I really would cry . I would like to try a Huddleston though in the 8" ROF 5 which is just over 4oz., what do you think of that? If it's still overtaxing my rod I'll just look towards the 8" Magdraft and 4D Pulsetail's. Super User NorcalBassin Posted October 31, 2020 Super User Posted October 31, 2020 I think that's a good plan to stay <8" with that setup and then if you really get the itch to throw bigger baits go for the 806 or even 867. If you don't have one in your SB arsenal, the Baitsanity Antidote performs well above its price point ($25 retail) at 7.5" and 2.7 oz. You could get away with an 8" Hudd with that rod, but dragging that much plastic plus having to drive home a big jig hook when you get a bite could be a challenge with that soft tip. I'm sure plenty of people have landed pigs on that exact setup... you'd just have to set the hook Hulk style. The Hudd 68 (2 oz) would be perfectly fine on that setup and it draws plenty of attention from giant bass. The 8" Magdraft you mentioned would be another good option since you already have a head start on the hookset as you're swimming it mid-column. Best of luck and be sure to post pics of the hawgs you'll be getting! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 1, 2020 Global Moderator Posted November 1, 2020 I'd second the Baitsanity Antidote. I have one and it's a really nice bait for the money. I like it way better than I liked the 200 S Waver. Quote

Yup, I do have a couple of the Antidotes...one in Trout and one in Perch colors. I haven't had a chance to try them out though as my family (like a lot of families I'm sure) has had a difficult year due to COVID and also my mother-in-law who lived with us passed away suddenly/unexpectedly this spring and she helped us watch our son. We also had a new baby boy in February right before everything went to hell and without my mother-in-law to help us we've been non-stop trying to juggle work, watching the kids, keeping up the house etc., been a real struggle to find time to get out much this year (maybe 6 - 8 times) . Keep your head up and your prayers going brother, this year's been heck on a lot of us. Condolences to you for your mother-in-law, God bless your family. You'll be back in the water before you know it. Quote
