Sissyfishing Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Using nets and drag systems causes the loss of most big fish, tighten the drag all the way then disengage your spinning reel and practice back winding even with light line 6 lb and playing a large fish (tire them out where you hooked them not at the boat) then moved to the fish with a tight line and rod high can save the day! Patience is required and you will rarely loose a good fish. 1 1
Super User WRB Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 Fewer and fewer spinning reel today have the ability to back reel. Good reason is excellent drags that you set 1/3rd the line break strength and trust the drags. Bass anglers have this concept to tighten down drags and try to over power the fish because of using line 3 times stronger then needed to control the bass. Tom 3
looking45 Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Reels have a drag for a reason. Everyone should learn how to use them 2
Super User MN Fisher Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 A properly set drag can allow you to bring in fish heavier than your line-test. I've caught northern pike up to 11lbs on 6# test mono with a spinning reel. Can't remember the last time I turned off my anti-reverse on any of my spinners...there's a reason they're sometimes called 'knuckle-busters'. 2
Sissyfishing Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 Don’t try to over power them just wear them out and back wind, that’s what a lot of the old timers do. Charlie brewer slider method for example its on YouTube if you like

Like you, I also backreel, but we’re the minority, and the fact manufacturers are starting to build reels without that switch is further proof of that ? 4
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 21, 2020 Global Moderator Posted October 21, 2020 A good drag is great until the line is compromised, then it's not longer properly set and you're stuck trying to adjust it while fighting a fish or just hoping for the best. I can decide instantly when to add to remove pressure when backreeling. 2
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 This is one reason why I don't buy Shimano spinning reels any longer. No anti reverse switch on them. 1

5by3 Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 I’m not a professional tournament angler, but I don’t see any reason to back reel given the drag technology in our reels today. For me it’s much easier to turn a dial to loosen drag than to fumble around and reel in the backwards direction. Just my own opinion.
Super User J Francho Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 The forum has a search feature that will show some really good topics recently posted regarding back reeling. 2
Super User FishTank Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 I haven't felt the the need to this when bass fishing. Maybe fishing saltwater but not fresh water bass. The drags now are amazing. I set the drag by pulling some line out and use what feels right for my line and reel/rod.

brrbass Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 One thing we like to do in the fall is chase stripers around with a spinning reel on 10 lb line. A good drag makes the difference in being able to land them or not. Every once in a while you get one that will try and spool you but its a blast. 1
Sissyfishing Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 Sounds great! Ever try back winding them strippers can make long hard runs
Super User J Francho Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 How is back reeling faster than drag?
Sissyfishing Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 Stripers not topless strippers lol they make hard runs too Not really faster it’s just a method of playing fish without them breaking off also keep your rod high at 11 o’clock if they make a run you can drop your rod to the water giving them room to run
Super User Mobasser Posted October 21, 2020 Super User Posted October 21, 2020 I've backreeled a lot over the years. I still do sometimes. I first got started on it after reading about Charlie Brewer and Billy Westmoreland, playing big fish this way. I picked up a new Shimano Sahara not long ago- with no AR switch. It works well with a smooth drag. I set my drag a little light, and apply extra pressure on the spool with my forefinger as I need to. Take up slack line as needed

Sissyfishing Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 Nasty, gotta stay focused for sure

The spool has lower mass, so technically it is the cheetah.
